Brunch Reimagined in Kaimuki

Step away from the Waikiki crowds and into the heart of Kaimuki, where Chef Lee Anne Wong has turned brunch into an island institution. Koko Head Cafe operates with an energy that mirrors the bustling Honolulu mornings; expect a lively, high-decibel dining room where the scent of sizzling bacon and fresh-brewed coffee hangs heavy in the air.

Signature Island Comfort

The menu is a love letter to local fusion, featuring standouts like the Cornflake-crusted French toast topped with black pepper maple bacon and creamy almond brittle. If you are seeking something savory, the breakfast bibimbap—served in a scorching hot stone bowl—provides a satisfying crackle as the rice crisps against the bottom. It is the kind of food that demands you slow down and actually taste the contrast between the sweet, salty, and spicy elements.

Things to Know Before You Go

Finding a parking spot in this pocket of Honolulu can be a test of patience, so arrive early or prepare to circle the blocks surrounding Waialae Avenue. The seating is intimate, meaning you will likely get to know your neighbor’s breakfast preferences as closely as your own. Whether you are a local regular or a visitor seeking an authentic taste of Hawaii’s culinary evolution, the cafe offers a bold, uncompromising start to the day. The service is brisk, the coffee is strong, and the flavor profiles are unapologetically big.

Food is excellent; definitely among the top 5 breakfast spots on the island at any price. Service is friendly. The only thing I dislike is the inclusion of a service charge with tax on the service charge.

Being from here, the parking lot drives me nuts cuz we never had to pay back in da day ☹️. I ordered the day’s kimchee dumplings. They were just ok. Nothing to write home about, tho the presentation was nice. Don’t know if their blueberry jam is homemade but it was delicious with the overpriced biscuit I got. The host/waiter was odd. No real personality. Wanted us to hand him our cups to refill our waters. Overall, Koko Head Cafe reminds me why I’m not a fan of regentrification.

Natty skillet: Lots of different ingredients with some pickled veggies. The fried poke was better than I expected. Refreshingly different. The crispy rice on the bottom of the skillet is crunchy. Nice but tasteless. They have a breakfast bimbimbap which has gouchijan would make it so much better. And I did! I ordered a side of go chi Jang and it is so much better with the rice!! The morning milk shake warning - lots of alcohol. With bacon and granola... Not for me. Service was excellent. Our server JT was very attentive and friendly. 👍🏼👍🏼

Excellent brunch spot, the only real negative I could mention was the bill structure. Adding a 5% kitchen/service charge and then still prompting for a full 20–25% tip on top feels cheeky. At that point, just price the menu honestly and pay the staff properly, rather than making the final bill feel inflated after the fact. That aside, the food itself was fantastic and I’d still recommend it.

Even though we had our toddler, we enjoyed our foodie experience! Mexican-Inspired Dumplings All Day Wong and Breakfast Bibimbap hit the spot for brunch. We also enjoyed the Lilikoi Fizz for a refreshing drink to tie everything together. Thank you, Koko Head Cafe for the yummy birthday brunch 😍!

Very good Breakfast with a Hawaiian flare! The food and service was excellent. The earlier you go the faster it is. It gets busy and wait times can increase. This is our second time and our first time we came later and it was slow but we came an hour earlier this time and it went way faster. Difference between 0800 and 0900 was huge on a Saturday. Pastries here are amazing too. Also the Hawaiian pancakes are a must! Also would recommend the congee (which is a porridge with amazing things in) also highly recommend!

6 solid food. Natty skillet was interesting and new. Egg handwich was solid and nice jam to add some interesting sweetness. French omelette was soft and good. Tropical fruit plate is a great idea. Solid brunch with a variety of good options including some healthy but not worth going out of the way

Fantastic food, great servers, everything was just soo good. I'd love to go again and try other things on the menu. Had the Omelet special with lamb, delish! Egg cooked to perfection, not your hard dry omelet. Our coffee and water were always filled. Not your standard breakfast joint... breakfast elevated, so good.

I really wanted to love this place because the food was actually pretty good — creative, tasty, and well-presented. However, the service was a huge disappointment and unfortunately overshadowed the entire dining experience. Our waitress was extremely unhelpful and unfriendly. She barely acknowledged us, didn’t offer any recommendations, and acted as if we were bothering her whenever we asked a question. Her attitude was surprisingly rude and showed a complete lack of responsibility or basic hospitality. It’s frustrating when a restaurant with good food suffers from poor service like this. Hopefully the management can improve their staff training, because the food deserves better. I would love to come back someday, but only if the service improves significantly.

Unfortunately the experience here left more to be desired. We had been seated at the bar with the bar tender as our server. This ordinarily wouldn’t be a problem but they sat some of their usual customers next to us with their dog. I love animals but I don’t like them being inside making a fuss while I’m eating. It’s unsanitary and unnecessary when they have patio dining. We had been sitting there for a bit waiting and instead of addressing us first the bar tender started up a conversation & took their drink and food orders before bothering to check in with us. During our wait they apparently have a very obnoxious tradition of adding money to a jar and shouting “adding to the beer fund” where all of the cooks and servers in the back start yelling and shouting. Not something I would expect at a breakfast spot and it definitely left a sour impression when they had to do it a second time just to get a video and were even more obnoxious. While the food is plated very well it’s honestly nothing to write home about. The flavor profile is lackluster & the portion size to pricing needs improvement. I get more of both for less money at other breakfast spots like Moena or island brew in Hawaii Kai. Not sure I will bother wasting my money here again to give it a second chance.
