About
A Dim Sum Tradition in the Heart of Honolulu
Walking into Kirin Chinese Restaurant, you are immediately greeted by the rhythmic clatter of bamboo steamer baskets hitting wooden tables. Located within the vibrant landscape of Honolulu, this spot has built a reputation for authentic Cantonese-style cuisine that prioritizes traditional preparation over modern flair.
The Sensory Experience
The dining room carries the distinct, comforting aroma of ginger, scallion, and jasmine tea. Diners navigate a bustling environment where the servers move with practiced efficiency, weaving through tables filled with local families and food enthusiasts. It is loud, lively, and unpretentious—the kind of place where the focus remains entirely on the steaming plates rather than the decor.
Signature Flavors
Kirin is best known for its diverse dim sum selection, with the har gow and pork siu mai frequently cited as staples. The kitchen excels at balancing textures, from the delicate translucence of their dumpling skins to the crispy exterior of their deep-fried specialties. If you visit for dinner, the house-special roast duck is a must-try, offering a rich, savory profile that pairs perfectly with a side of choy sum.

Went to Kirin for the first time. We had a party of 12 and they had a perfect semi-private table for us away from the main dining area. Cindy was our main server and along with the others gave us beyond excellent service. We ordered two of the live dungeness crabs which were tasty, as well as a mix of other noodle and ala carte dishes. Their honey walnut shrimp was another highlight. The dishes were on the small side, but were very good overall. Cindy made excellent suggestions and was very attentive and accommodating! We highly enjoyed our dining experience and will come back again.

We had a wonderful time celebrating Chinese new year. Plenty of room for a table of 9. Reservation definitely recommended for a larger group. The food was amazing. The crab was fresh and done in their special sauce, delicious. The fish was light and flaky . Veggies could be cooked a bit more (crunchy) but still good. Walnut shrimp was light and flavorful. Nothing was bad. Plus an added bonus of lion dance and blessing for the holiday.

Hounded me for a tip like 6 times even before my wife and I got our food. Never have I ever experience that rude behavior before at a restaurant. Tips are earned based on service not just given to you. Only checked on us once when we were done. Food presentation was good but the taste was just ok, not worth the price tbh. No refills on the mango tea which is cheap to make so makes no sense but was good. There was a bird flying around the dining room. The staff didn’t seem bothered by it. Probably wouldn’t recommend eating here at least with our experience.
