A Messy, Spice-Laden Feast in the Heart of Waikiki

If you find yourself wandering near the Ala Wai Canal, follow the scent of garlic butter and chili oil. Karai Crab is where the formal dining rules of Honolulu go to die. Here, it is perfectly acceptable—and highly encouraged—to don a plastic bib and attack a pile of king crab legs with your bare hands.

The Boil Experience

The menu centers on their signature Cajun-style seafood boils. You select your catch—ranging from snow crab and Dungeness to shrimp and clams—and customize the heat level. The "Karai" sauce is the main event; it is a punchy, golden-hued blend that coats everything in a savory, aromatic glaze. Watch out for the "Inferno" level, which lives up to its name and will test your tolerance for local chili heat.

Vibe and Practicality

The atmosphere is loud, casual, and unapologetically high-energy. It’s the kind of spot where you’ll hear the clatter of shellfish crackers over upbeat pop music. It isn’t a place for an intimate, quiet conversation, but it is ideal for a rowdy group dinner after a long day at the beach.

A quick tip for locals and visitors alike: parking in this pocket of the city can be a headache, so give yourself extra time to circle the block or consider a ride-share. The tables are covered in butcher paper for a reason—embrace the mess, order an extra side of garlic noodles to soak up the leftover sauce, and enjoy one of the most hands-on meals you’ll find in Hawaii.

We came here for the reviews. Food was great, but very pricey and air conditioning at start was uncomfortable. The conversion in Canadian was $367CAD for a mom and 6 year old! We had 1 dungeon and 1 king crab, clams, garlic fries and one cocktail and a virgin drink. Good to experience but too expensive for our budget unfortunately. We could of went to a luau for same price :(

$92 per pound King Crab destroyed by gobs and gobs of garlic. Haven’t they tasted their food? Tacky open storage shelves at front door. Server impatient with tiny requests, though we were ONLY customers. Crab not even split, lots of work. Could have offered to split the legs for additional charge (normally $30-70/lb). Could have offered plain drawn butter. Could have offered a flight of sauces instead of forcing a choice. Should have served any sauce on the side and not drowned entire order in it. Could have cleaned their filthy front door. Difficult parking. All we wanted was the pure, sweet taste of wonderful crab with drawn butter on the side but the sauces were forced on us. Served in an ugly metal mixing bowl. This place is GARLIC with a side of crab. Beware!

We had our family dinner here recently and everything was really good. The food was amazing! It was larger than what the picture shows. There was 5 adults and 2 children in our party and it was more than enough. We got the Kraken from the Happy Hour menu and we also ordered the Miso clams. The staff was very attentive and friendly.

Best seafood in Honolulu!! I ate here at the old location about 8 years ago with my family on our summer vacation to Hawaii. My dad hasn’t stopped talking about how good this place was. My husband and I came to Hawaii for our honeymoon and I took him to the new location. Parking was easy and I loved that they had a visual instruction video to show you how to access the garage. It was by far our most favourite meal on our entire trip. The service was top-notch - super friendly and they check on you consistently. The food is absolutely amazing. Super flavourful and cooked perfectly. The calamari were the most tender squid we’ve ever had. We got the colossal sampler for the two of us and it was outstanding - definitely get the karai special sauce. I loved that they give you a bib, scissors, gloves, crab roll, and a bowl for your garbage. You make a huge mess but it’s well worth it and the table it’s covered with paper for that reason. The drinks were also the best we’ve had in Honolulu. And we had the pecan tarts for dessert - perfect way to end the meal. We wish we could’ve come again during our stay in Honolulu. It’s family run and you can tell how passionate they are about serving you the best seafood and ensuring you have the best dining experience. It’s definitely worth the short trek out of Waikiki. Highly highly recommend Karai Crab!

On vacay and we decided we wanted seafood so stopped by to give it a try. We ordered the spicy garlic shrimp and king crab with no mess shrimp (shrimp peeled/headless). You can add different sauces to the boil and different heat levels to each sauce. We chose the Karai special sauce, habanero spicy and added some corn on the cob. The meal was really good, and although it was habanero, it wasn't really spicy. The garlic shrimp was very good. I would recommend this for all you shrimp lovers for sure. Corn wasn't really sweet and seemed like all the flavor came from the sauce. We also ordered a couple drinks. I really wanted to try the chocolatini. I absolutely love chocolate! Well as you can see in the picture, the glass came half full and tasted very little of chocolate. I was extremely disappointed, so I sent it back and settled for water. Was not sure what my friend ordered but she drank it & advised it wasn't what she expected either. I would skip the alcohol if I came back. Other than the drinks, everything else was good. It is pricey but was an experience. The staff was really attentive and helpful with the ordering process and explaining things. Note: Only parking we found nearby we did have to pay, but it was around $2.50 for like 1.5 hrs so it wasn't expensive at all. If you read my review, please hit the like button. Thank you

Service is always great, staff is highly attentive. We often order the Kraken and I love the seasoning! Food is delicious but sometimes it feels too buttery and the food tastes lukewarm. Nevertheless, garlic noodles never disappoints!

We wanted to order Dungeness crab but they only had the legs. So we ordered snow crab combo with Karai special sauce. Taste was great and good amount of food for 2 people if you are not big eater. Service was really good too! If you are craving for seafood, I highly recommend 😊

Sweet stuff, super fast serving speed, and delicious food make it worthy of 5 star. Recommend the catfish, any shellfish with the spicy Cajun flavor. The snow crab is either not fresh or overcooked, that’s what I would not recommend.

Karai Crab was awesome. The Karai wings were crunchy and seasoned perfectly. The fries were cooked just right with a crunch. My wife loved the shrimp and chicken. Food came out 7 minutes after ordering and my drink never went empty and I got 8 refills. Amazing service and food.
