A Slice of Hong Kong Dining in Honolulu

When you step into Kapiolani Seafood Restaurant, the first thing you notice is the rhythmic clatter of woks and the hum of a busy dining room packed with locals. Located in the heart of Honolulu’s vibrant Kapiolani corridor, this establishment captures the essence of a traditional Cantonese banquet hall without the pretense. The walls are adorned with classic decor that feels like a trip to old-school Hong Kong, providing a grounded, unpretentious backdrop for some of the freshest seafood on the island.

Signature Cantonese Craftsmanship

The kitchen here is defined by its mastery of live tanks, where Dungeness crab and rock cod wait to be prepared to your liking. Their salt and pepper crab is widely considered a staple, boasting a crispy, garlic-heavy exterior that gives way to sweet, tender meat. It is the kind of dish meant for communal sharing, typically enjoyed while spinning a Lazy Susan surrounded by friends. Another standout is the ginger scallion lobster, a fragrant dish that highlights the restaurant's commitment to clean, punchy flavors.

The Local Dining Rhythm

This is a spot for those who appreciate authentic flavor profiles over polished aesthetic frills. Be prepared for a lively, occasionally loud atmosphere, especially during weekend dim sum hours when the carts circulate quickly. It’s a fast-paced environment where the servers are efficient and focused on the job at hand. Parking in the surrounding blocks can be a bit of a puzzle during peak lunch hours, but the trade-off is a meal that feels honest, hearty, and deeply rooted in the culinary traditions of the Kapiolani neighborhood. Whether you are craving a late-night feast or a robust family lunch, the kitchen stays consistent in delivering that classic savory satisfaction that keeps the local Honolulu crowd returning.

Taking everything into consideration, our dim sum experience here was good. Leave it to our compatriots from Guangdong; they have the ability to turn any restaurant, anywhere on earth, into an old Hong Kong-style dim sum eatery. The atmosphere was quite noisy, with crowds waiting in the cramped space left over from packing tables into a room clearly not meant for them. Just like your standard run of the mill Hong Kong dim sum eatery. As for the food, the dishes were pretty tasty. Everything we tried was above average for Honolulu, though more or less average or slightly below average when compared to the dim sum scene in Los Angeles, a 3/star at best. The service was friendly and quick, and the seating area was tight and noisy—no surprises there.

Glad we called to check as we are visiting from outside Hawaii. My brother who lives here said they moved. As of March 8, 2026, the restaurant has moved across the street and is very close to the old one. Here is their new address: 747 Amana Street C102, Honolulu, 96814. We loved their dim sum and came back again for dinner. Loved their food. My brother who is a local enjoyed their food dishes and plans to order food for future take out. Good Chinese restaurant to try.

Our foodie group held our annual lunar new year gathering of 33 people - 11 per table, which was too tight but that was our fault for not capping the guest count. The staff was very helpful and accommodating, and everyone thought our set menu selection ($50 per person) was excellent. By the final dishes, though, we were too stuffed to really eat it all. BTW, they serve the rice and veggies toward the end, so if you want those served earlier in the course, you should request that. Parking is a bit of an issue - spots are limited in the lot, so come early before the dining rush if you want to snag one.
