A Downtown Lunch Escape

Tucked away inside the Bishop Square food court, Kamana Kitchen offers a quick, aromatic shift from the high-rise intensity of Downtown Honolulu. The air here carries the distinct, heady scent of toasted cumin and simmering ginger-garlic pastes that immediately signals a departure from standard office-lunch fare.

Authentic North Indian Flavors

Chef-driven preparation ensures that staples like Chicken Tikka Masala and Palak Paneer maintain a consistent, hearty depth. The kitchen leans into traditional clay oven techniques, resulting in naan that arrives warm, blistered, and chewy—perfect for scooping up the rich, buttery gravies. It is a no-frills setting where the focus is entirely on the intensity of the spices rather than white-tablecloth pretense.

The Urban Lunch Pulse

This spot is tailored for the local professional looking for a substantial mid-day meal. Be prepared for a bustling, high-energy environment during the weekday lunch rush; the line moves efficiently, but it can get quite loud as the office crowd descends. If you are navigating the Financial District, it provides a reliable, flavor-forward solution when you need something more satisfying than a pre-packaged salad. It is functional, flavorful, and distinctly local in its utility for the surrounding business community.

I ordered the yellow dal soup for takeout last night. I have previously ordered this and it was hearty filled with lots of lentils and delicious. Being excited about the quality last time, I ordered again and received a soup that was basically just broth. If you’re going to serve a hearty soup that’s fine or if you’re just going to serve a broth soup that’s ok too but the inconsistency from having a soup full of chunky goodness to almost nothing is pretty disappointing to me. The picture shows what I received in my soup after i poured out all the liquid…..next time I’m ordering broth only I just want to know I’m ordering broth only so I have a choice or I want the same quality of product I ordered previously.

If there was an option for 4.5* I would’ve given this place. Great variety of food, good taste. Me and wife tried the kadai paneer and dal fry and both of them tasted amazing. The reason I am not giving it a 5 star rating is because the space was a bit too tight for 2 people, restaurant itself is pretty average not super amazing and the portion sizes seemed a bit small. Apart from that really nice place with good food. Highly recommend.

Everything was mid. The interior and the food. Nothing tasted horrible, but nothing stood out either. We ordered some non veg Thalia’s, Maharashi chicken, red chicken boti, malai bit, and lamb botis. The meat quality wasn’t the best—the lamb was chewy and gamey, and chicken tasted rubbery. But the seasonings and marinades were good. It would’ve been really good had the meat quality been better. Naan was good and fresh. Overall, it fulfilled the desi food craving for my in-laws but they didn’t really care for the food. And I had similar thoughts. The server was busy but doing her best. Nice people, just wish the food was better.
