About
A Meat Lover’s Anchor in Kalihi
Stepping into Kalihi Super Meats is a rite of passage for anyone seeking the pulse of authentic Honolulu food culture. This isn't your average deli; it’s a working butcher shop that functions as the neighborhood's unofficial kitchen. The air inside carries the heavy, savory scent of house-cured meats and smoky kiawe, a smell that signals quality long before you reach the counter.
The Art of the Local Plate
While the display cases are packed with high-grade cuts, the real draw is the hot food line. Known for serving some of the most reliable Hawaiian-style plate lunches in the city, the kitchen excels at transforming traditional butchery into comfort food. Their shoyu chicken and fried pork chops are staples, often served alongside two scoops of sticky white rice and creamy macaroni salad. It is the kind of fuel that powers the local workforce—unpretentious, generous, and deeply satisfying.
Expect a Bustling Morning Rush
If you visit during the mid-morning shift, be prepared for a lively, fast-paced environment. It’s a place where you’ll hear the rhythmic thud of cleavers against heavy wooden blocks and the hum of friendly chatter between staff and long-time regulars. The space is efficient and functional, so don't expect a leisurely dining room; most people grab their foam boxes to-go, heading toward nearby piers or job sites to dig in. Parking in the Kalihi industrial area can get tight as the lunch hour approaches, so plan to navigate the narrow lot with a bit of patience. For those chasing the true flavor of Oahu beyond the tourist hubs, this butcher shop delivers a raw, unfiltered look at Honolulu’s culinary backbone.

Excellent place to stock up on savory snacks, pre-wrapped and ready to go. Garlic Shrimp, head on, is perfectly fried and edible in their entirety; chew thoroughly. Lumpia, dip in complimentary vinegar sauce, yum. Garlic Peanuts, a perfect accompaniment to a cold beer.

12/18/2021 Went to Kalihi Super Meat in search of something (small snacks) to eat. While they had a pretty wide assortment of party pans and hot dishes, which looked yummy, nothing jumped out at us this time. Checked out their frozen selections too. We'll be back again. 4 stars only because the parking is difficult and there aren't many stalls.
