Kaiten Sushi Ginza Onodera Hawaii
About
A Sophisticated Spin on Conveyor Belt Dining
Stepping into this sleek space near the heart of Waikiki, you immediately notice the shift from standard fast-casual dining to something far more refined. Kaiten Sushi Ginza Onodera brings the precision of Tokyo’s high-end omakase culture to a high-tech, rotating belt format. The air is filled with the faint, clean scent of vinegared rice and fresh ocean spray, underscored by the gentle hum of the belt circulating colorful plates.
The Craft Behind the Belt
This isn't your average grab-and-go sushi shop. The culinary team sources premium ingredients, often flying in high-grade seafood directly from Japan’s Toyosu Market. While the belt offers a playful, interactive way to sample dishes, the quality remains strictly traditional. Their signature bluefin tuna courses are a standout, offering a buttery richness that melts instantly, while the ikura nigiri displays a vibrant, popping freshness that confirms the kitchen’s dedication to quality control.
The Honolulu Experience
The interior is polished, minimalist, and bright, making it an excellent choice for a quick business lunch or an elevated dinner after a day at the beach. You will likely find yourself mesmerized by the digital ordering system at each seat, which allows you to summon specialized items that arrive with satisfying mechanical precision. It is worth noting that during peak dinner hours, the narrow layout can get quite bustling, and you might find yourself in close proximity to fellow diners—a small price to pay for such high-caliber sashimi in the middle of Honolulu.
Who Should Visit?
Ideal for seafood purists who appreciate the convenience of modern technology without sacrificing the integrity of the fish. Whether you are a solo traveler looking for an efficient but high-quality meal or a small group wanting to share a variety of nigiri and handrolls, this spot bridges the gap between casual accessibility and elite Japanese craftsmanship.

IYKYK: 20 restaurants, 3 countries, and 15 time Michelin Star recipient. Found in Japan, China, and America (in beautiful Honolulu and Houston), it's Kaiten Sushi Ginza Onodera! There are meals one enjoys. Meals one admires. Meals one respectfully documents, notes the flavor balance of, and later describes using words like "elegant" and "well-executed." And then there are meals that rock your world. This was one of them. Kaiten sushi, or conveyor belt sushi, is a casual, affordable Japanese dining style invented in 1958 where plates of sushi rotate on a motorized belt passing diners, allowing them to select dishes directly. Here at Kaiten Sushi Ginza Onodera, it's not the typical catwalk of pre-made maki rolls, nigiri, and other offering. You order off a kiosk and then it is fast-tracked to your table via sushi belt. Here at Kaiten Sushi Ginza Onodera, you are granted the ability to try their Edomae-style sushi for a more affordable price. Edomae-style sushi is a traditional Tokyo cuisine originating in the 1820s, featuring seafood, often cured, marinated, or simmered, served atop rice seasoned with red vinegar (akasu). It focuses on enhancing fish flavor through technique rather than just raw freshness, historically acting as fast food for 19th-century Edo residents. That said, dare I say the best meal I had during my stay on Oahu? I DARE! This was an excellent place suggested by Randy S. I really can't tell you all we had because Randy took charge but every bite? Certified bangers. Not one bad bite had. Pro-tip: If you want to feel like you are being mugged by Neptune, the God of the Sea, have the chawanmushi. Oceanic and delish!

Best kaiten place I've been to, by a mile (be it in Japan or the US). A bit different in a few ways. All orders are placed a la carte on the tablet in front of you and then sent to you by conveyor, rather than having plates of various price points circling the restaurant. Nice that you get everything right after it's made! Good sushi preparation; very good nigiri. This does all come at a noticeably higher price point though - you get what you pay for. Easily recommendable, just worth noting that this is more like genuinely good stuff sent by conveyor, rather than a cheap bite.

This is my second time here. It's a direct conveyer belt sushi service, kind of like Genki sushi, but better because your order arrives directly to you. I only come when there are specials that I like (I believe they run specials all the time). Otherwise, their prices are quite a bit higher, like $24 for two ama ebi. When the specials are running, they are priced really reasonable for those items. This time, they had Tuna on special. We were interested mostly in the O-toro but was surprised when the Chu-toro was way better than the O-toro. We tend to eat more than usual and go to lots of omakase and sushi restaurants, so quality is what we look for and they have it. Service is good when ordering on the tablet but getting wait staff is another thing, they do tend to get busy so raise your hand and wait for them to come. The decor in restaurant is just kind of meh, it has both booths and a long shared table with pull up seats along the conveyer belt. Although I've never sat at the regular tables, I would think it's good for 6 or less parties. They get busy so try making a rez. We tried calling but no one answered so we decided to get there early and they were already packed just before 6pm We had a 300ml bottle of Kubota saki on special for $12 (cheap!) along with all the sushi and our bill came out to just over $200 with tip. It's not the ideal place for a first date but if they are having a special that you like and or you want good quality sushi, its a good place. I'll be back for sure. Couple of tips: Order the wasabi and ginger first (on the tablet) before ordering sushi If you're wanting alcohol, let the staff know so they can unlock the feature

Came here thinking it was going to be the same as the location in Japan. Sushi was fresh, but didn’t hit the same as in Japan, something wasn’t as good. Best dishes were the Hawaiian fusion ones. Prices felt a little outrageous to me - $5-15/piece. I think if you come to Hawaii thinking you’ll get Japanese standards, you’ll be disappointed. It’s not bad, but it’s just not there yet.

Hands down the best sushi place I have ever been too! From the beginning we walked in with my family. We were greeted with a huge smile and got seated in a private booth. The service, the staff and atmosphere there is really nice and kid friendly! After we payed our meal. The host/server gave my son a free toy. Thank you so much for not rushing him because he couldn’t decide what to pick. We had a great time here and we can’t wait to be back again!!

We were immediately greeted upon walking in. We did not have a reservation but were able to be seated as soon as we walked in. Because there were just the 2 of us, we opted for counter seating. The counters were clean and set with a tablet used for ordering and a food conveyor belt directly in front of you. Ordering food with the tablet was easy and convenient. Food arrived within minutes of ordering. The fish is fresh and the cut proportions are generous. The staff is attentive and polite. We will definitely be going back for more.

If you’ve never been, this is as close to Japan as you can get in the US. Super fresh sushi, melt-in-your-mouth fish, and an authentic, cozy atmosphere. Every dish was top quality and beautifully presented. Friendly service, fair prices, absolutely worth returning again and again. I felt like I was in Japan, even the menu was like higher end Japanese sushi restaurants.

I went to this restaurant on a Saturday for lunch right as they opened. We walked in, and luckily, they had availability. We were quickly seated since it wasn't busy yet. The restaurant interior was very upscale and fancy. With the silver, mirror-like ceiling and marble-like floors, it was definitely an upscale sushi restaurant. The booth we sat in was spacious. The table provided wet napkins, which was helpful for cleaning our hands without having to visit the restroom. The booth seating was slightly dirty, but nothing we couldn't clean on our own. The seat was also very comfortable, but it has a slight forward tilt, making you feel slightly seated forward. We were concerned my two-year-old niece would slide off. Luckily, the height of the table was perfect for her. The table has a tablet where you select your dishes/beverages, place your order, and can check out. The four of us ate quite a bit of food. We ordered everything from the vegetable tempura to the 8-piece chu toro. Everything was good. I was slightly disappointed that the chu toro wasn't as soft as I remembered, whereas the salmon set was so delicious and memorable. The fried chicken was nicely cooked, tender, and crispy. The uni and salmon roe were savory and delicious. For dessert, the black sesame ice cream, azuki beans, and wafer were a nice end to the lunch. Service was good; they came around often to fill our water. We only called them over for very specific requests. If I have a special celebration, I definitely would come back. It's not as good as eating in Japan, but it's one of the best in Hawaii.

Greeted and seated right away without reservations. The staff from beginning to end were very friendly and helpful. They have choices of booths and counter style seats. We sat in a booth. We found out they had a lunch special so that's what we ordered. Hamachi Teishoku set, hamachi jalapeño ponzu, Castella Tamago and Tempura Teishoku. The food was good quality and delicious! They have stamp cards too so don't forget to stamp it before you leave!

The venue is clean, chilly (air conditioner is on high) and a bit clinical. I say this because the booths are large with high backs and intercepted by a large wooden wall/shelf (that might later hold a food service bullet train track that I’ve seen in Waikiki and California). Anyway, service is attentive and prompt albeit interpersonal given the tablet ordering system and calling for service vs. having people check-in with you. Onto the food part of the review. We ordered 3 sashimi sets. What I love is being able to customize how much rice (least, please) and soup accompaniment. Eating with the eyes (yes); Quality cuts of fish (yes); Perfect portion size — satiated yet still able to eat a little something more (yes). It was my birthday so they even offered a free dessert. (So sweet ありがとう)The one pet peeve I have to share is that while I usually gravitate to booth seating, I couldn’t help but feel like I was on a slippery slide after 15 minutes (LOL).
