L&L Hawaiian Barbecue - Honolulu (Kilauea Avenue)
About
A Local Staple in the Heart of Kahala
When you find yourself cruising through East Honolulu, the craving for a heavy, satisfying plate lunch is practically inevitable. Tucked into the bustling shopping centers of the Kahala neighborhood, this particular L&L Hawaiian Barbecue outpost serves up the quintessential flavors that define island comfort food. The air here carries the distinct, savory scent of charred teriyaki beef and the sweet aroma of bubbling macaroni salad.
Why Grab a Plate Here?
This is the spot for those who value efficiency without sacrificing the iconic "two-scoops rice" experience. Whether you are coming off the beach or fueling up before heading into the city, the menu is built on tradition. The Chicken Katsu is a perennial favorite, arriving with that signature golden-brown panko crunch that pairs perfectly with their proprietary katsu sauce. If you want the full experience, go for the Mix Plate—it is the heavy lifter that keeps construction crews and office workers running through the afternoon.
The Island Pace
Expect a casual, no-frills environment where the sounds of sizzling grills dominate the space. It is loud, busy, and unpretentious. One thing to keep in mind: during the midday rush, the parking lot can get tighter than a jammed surfboard rack, so you might need a little patience while maneuvering. The interior is purely utilitarian, designed for grabbing your styrofoam container and heading straight to a nearby park or beachside lookout. It is not about white tablecloths; it is about getting high-quality, authentic Hawaiian-style comfort food delivered quickly to those who appreciate a reliable, hearty meal in the Honolulu sun.

Mediocre food for high prices. Charged me $1.80 for a side order of katsu sauce “2oz” after I just paid $20 for a chicken Katsu Plate Lunch. Local spot if you’re just looking to get stuffed with food and fall asleep after. I’d recommend for someone who is just purely hungry. Loco Moco drive in is better

Raise in prices . Not worth it anymore. Won’t be going back. One more thing the last straw of being ripped off. $12.50 for a STEW BOWL ask that it with NO rice. So the stew bowl is only halfway of the bowl.3 inches of stew but still cost $12.50 .F that not paying got my money back. NEVER EATING THERE AGAIN.

It's a good thing I only ordered the mini chicken katsu. I could only have a few bites of it and had to throw out the rest. The mac salad was bland, the breading on the chicken was heavy, the chicken itself was thin and dry. There were no juicy pieces, I looked. Worst of all the katsu sauce was sweeter than sugar. It would've paired better with pancakes. More than disappointed because I do not like to waste food.

I have been going to the Kahala location and loved their teri chicken. Things have changed. They now serve the worse teri chicken ever! The chicken is way, way over cooked! The chicken is dry, tough, texture like beef Jerky and with very little teri sauce if any. I have mentioned this to the clerk today and expected a better experience, again, as I sit here eating my plate, the chicken is dry, tough, way over cooked or was warmed up to many times, some parts I spat out as it was dry stringy and chewy. It could not be broken down to swallow or I would have choked! I discarded it. No teri sauce at all. Although I live across the street from the Kahala location, I will be going to the Kaimuki, Waialae store. The teri chicken is very tender; juicy, tasty and they put teri sauce on the meat. Totally inconsistent to what L & L 's is known for. I must mention that I'm handicapped.

The service was very pleasant, the cashier taking orders has a great atmosphere about herself. Let me tell you the steak and rice with garlic shrimp added was bomb !
