Kahai Kitchen
About
A Neighborhood Staple in Kaimuki
Stepping into Kahai Kitchen feels like grabbing lunch at a friend’s house who happens to be a master of local comfort food. Situated in the heart of the Kaimuki district, this spot draws a steady stream of Honolulu locals looking for lunch plates that go well beyond the standard drive-in fare. You will often find the small dining area buzzing with conversation, accompanied by the persistent, rhythmic hum of the kitchen ventilation fan and the scent of house-made katsu sauce wafting toward the counter.
Modern Twists on Plate Lunch Classics
What sets this kitchen apart is a commitment to elevation. While it remains firmly grounded in Hawaiian plate lunch culture, the menu highlights chef-driven touches. The Furikake Crusted Salmon is a consistent standout, featuring a crisp, savory coating that cuts through the richness of the fish. If you are leaning toward something heartier, the slow-braised short ribs melt with a tenderness that suggests hours of careful attention. Portions are generous, bordering on daunting, designed for the serious appetite.
The Kaimuki Reality
It is worth noting that space inside is limited, and during the peak of the lunch rush, you might find yourself navigating a bit of a crowd near the pick-up window. Parking in the surrounding blocks requires a bit of patience, but that is simply the tax you pay for some of the best-prepared island comfort food in the city. It is the perfect place for those who prioritize flavor and authenticity over white-tablecloth pretense. Whether you are grabbing a quick bite before heading back to the office or picking up a box to take down to the beach, the food here reflects the diverse culinary identity of Honolulu.

I rarely give 5 stars on a review unless the business is exceptional in all areas. This business deserves 10 stars! I’ve been eating here everyday for over a week and I just love their food. I can’t wait to see what I’ll have that day and I intend to try everything on the menu. Every ingredient is fresh and prepared on the spot and they give you a choice of 2 side dishes. They have the normal local food take outs but more like the kalbi tacos (gotta try) and the guava brisket. Or the hamburger steak that’s tastes like steak, grilled on the fire then ground up and cooked to your liking. Best hamburger steak I’ve ever had! Lots of fresh fish like ahi and salmon, some burgers and salads. Today I had the sunrise special, which is one egg, fried rice and I thought a choice of meat but it included all of the meat: hash patty, Portuguese sausage & bacon on the side, all for $11. They close early, 7pm and only on saturdays they do breakfast and close at 2pm, closed on Sunday and Monday. A small parking lot behind the restaurant or street parking, dine outside or in a small dining room. I can’t say enough about Kahai street kitchen so you have to go and try it yourself, then let me know how you liked it. I’ll update this review as I try more of their menu and I’ll add pictures of the menu next time.

The most incredible plate lunch I’ve had on the island. Around $20 for gourmet food. I had the Thursday turkey special—easily the most delicious turkey and gravy, with a local twist featuring Portuguese sausage. The cranberry sauce was amazing, and the garlic mac on the side was the best I’ve ever had. I couldn’t believe how good everything was—I kind of cried. The woman taking my order was so friendly, kind, and gave great recommendations. This place really caught me by surprise. I didn’t know plate lunch could be this good. Mind blown.

I've ordered from this establishment off and on since they were located in kalihi. Recently my coworkers and I ordered takeout from here. Their elevated plate lunches were good but seem alittle different this time. I got the poutine chicken katsu. I enjoyed it, but the amount of poutine and cheese on the katsu seemed sparse. The hapa rice is just half brown/half white, also felt like a letdown. My coworkers got the combo plate and the braised short ribs plate. They agreed it was good. My other coworker on the other hand ordered fries and hamburger. All of us tried the fries agreed it tasted old, like its been sitting out for awhile. Two of us recall the taste of the fries being very crispy and seasoned...it was disappointing this time. I believe this is a one-off situation. Normally the food is delicious and savory. I still believe its better to go here than Rainbow drive inn or L&L drive inn.
