A Neighborhood Staple for Cantonese Classics

Stepping into Jun Bo Chinese Restaurant on Maunakea Street, you are greeted by the hum of trolley wheels rattling against the floor and the steady clatter of bamboo steamer baskets. This is the heart of Honolulu’s Chinatown, where locals gather under bright fluorescent lights for a no-frills, authentic dim sum experience. The atmosphere is boisterous and unapologetically traditional, making it a favorite for families looking to grab a quick, satisfying meal before wandering through the nearby lei shops and markets.

Signature Bites and Traditional Flavors

The kitchen excels at the classics, with their shrimp har gow and pork siu mai acting as the baseline for a quality dim sum outing. Frequent diners often point to the chicken feet and turnip cake as essential orders for those seeking genuine Cantonese profiles. The menu stays true to its roots, avoiding unnecessary fusion elements in favor of recipes that prioritize consistency and depth of flavor. If you visit on a weekend morning, be prepared for a lively, crowded room where sharing tables is common practice and the pace is brisk.

A Local Perspective

While the decor leans toward utilitarian, the value is undeniable. The service is efficient—sometimes blunt—which is part of the charm for regular patrons who value substance over ceremony. Parking in the surrounding Chinatown blocks can be a competitive sport, so arrive early or prepare to walk a few extra minutes from a nearby public lot. It is the kind of place where you don't go for a quiet conversation; you go for the steam rising off a fresh plate of rice noodle rolls and the steady rhythm of a bustling Honolulu institution.

Best deal in town for lunch. Fried chicken is the best and very very affordable. It's down a long alleyway but you'll be rewarded with a good meal at a great price.

Great value for the price. Everything from house specials to their ala cart selection is worth it too. Looks like their hours has changed post COVID, they are only open till 2 PM or till they run out. I highly recommend the Oyster Sauce Chicken with Cake Noodles.

Jun Bo used to be on our rotation of lunch spots because the portions are large and it's reasonably priced. The issue for some of my tablemates is their use of MSG; I'm not affected but they are... so, if you're not affected, it's a value play location.

super hole-in-the-wall Chinese food spot, hidden down an alley way along Merchant St. between Leather Soul & Brue Bar. some of my faves are: the won ton mein, perfect for a rainy day, the fried chicken, and the cold ginger chicken. large portions for reasonable prices. but remember, it's cash only!

Love the staff! Love the food even more. Delicious Jai, salt and pepper pork chops, stuffed eggplant, sweet sour pork! Miss them being open on Saturdays.

Small little place tucked into an alleyway in downtown. Good chinese food for fairly cheap. Its nice and clean and the staff is pretty attentive and quick. Gets pretty busy at lunch time but you can usually get in and out easily if youre in a rush.

Good food for cheap. Hot line food choices are tasty and very quick to order and p/u. Oyster sauce chicken on cake noodle is my favorite. Nothing fancy but a great value.
