About
A Hidden Pocket of Tokyo in McCully
Stepping into Jugem feels less like walking into a Honolulu restaurant and more like stumbling upon a quiet, high-quality izakaya in a back alley of Shinjuku. Located in the heart of the McCully area, this spot shuns the flashy tourist tropes of Waikiki in favor of dim lighting, wooden accents, and a focused menu that commands your full attention.
The Art of the Teishoku
The kitchen is helmed by chefs who treat the teishoku—a traditional Japanese set meal—with serious precision. Their signature approach centers on impeccably crisp tonkatsu, where the breading shatters with a satisfying crunch, revealing tender, juicy pork loin inside. You will hear the gentle sizzle of the fryer from the counter seats, mixed with the low hum of Japanese television playing in the background, a sensory staple of the authentic izakaya aesthetic.
What to Expect
This is a place for those who appreciate a no-frills culinary experience. It is ideal for a solo diner looking to unwind after a long day or a pair wanting a quiet conversation over steaming bowls of miso soup and perfectly seasoned rice. While the flavors are bold and comforting, keep in mind that the space is compact. You might find yourself elbow-to-elbow with regulars, and parking in this neighborhood can be a bit of a jigsaw puzzle, so plan your arrival accordingly. If you value food quality over sprawling menus and loud music, this Japanese gem is a necessary stop for anyone navigating the diverse dining landscape of Honolulu.

Delicious mom-and-pop home-style Japanese curry house with a cute and cozy vibe. They have games for children to play, some Japanese merch for sale, and get booked up during dinner time. Good prices for the portions. They have some sweet drinks and desserts, and they also serve beer and wine.

The food was pretty meh - nothing compared to the seemingly rave reviews. The curry was nothing special and the chicken katsu was bland. I got better curry at The International Marketplace. I wanted to like Jugem but can’t give it more than 3/5.

Cozy restaurant with nice employees and great food! I loved the tonkatsu and curry, and you get free curry refills if you enjoy a 3:1 curry to rice ratio like me. It was quiet and not crowded, perfect for catching up with friends. This place is a hidden gem :)

Great food, friendly staff, fast service! It really reminds me of a small mom-n-pop shop in japan that welcomes everyone with a smile and serves consistent good home cooking. The portions are big and the curry is delicious.
