About
A Neighborhood Staple in Kaimuki
For those navigating the quieter side streets of Kaimuki, Irifune offers a refreshingly unpretentious break from the high-end resort dining found closer to Waikiki. This long-standing eatery functions as a local sanctuary, defined by walls covered in framed artwork and an atmosphere that feels more like a friend’s kitchen than a commercial storefront. You will hear the rhythmic clatter of pans and the hum of conversation from residents who have been patronizing this spot for decades.
Signature Flavors and Culinary Identity
The menu remains anchored by its famous Garlic Ahi, a dish that has kept the dining room full for years. The fish is seared to preserve its buttery texture, then showered in a savory, aromatic garlic sauce that lingers in the best possible way. The menu leans heavily into Japanese comfort food, emphasizing hearty portions and consistent execution. Beyond the ahi, the fresh sashimi platters display the kitchen's commitment to quality sourcing, showcasing the clear, clean brine of local waters.
Practical Observations for Diners
Be prepared for a casual experience where the focus is strictly on the plate rather than formal service. The dining area is cozy, sometimes bordering on intimate, so don't be surprised if you end up brushing shoulders with the table next to you during a busy Friday dinner rush. Parking in this part of Honolulu requires a bit of patience, so factor in extra time to find a spot along the surrounding residential blocks. It is the ideal destination for anyone seeking a low-key, flavor-forward meal after a day at the beach, providing an authentic slice of local lifestyle without the polished veneers of tourist-centric corridors.

Great unassuming place downtown! Good quality food, no frills but that adds to the charm of the place. Decent amount of outdoor seatings. Decent price in this economy.

One of the best Japanese plate lunches in Downtown. It’s always made fresh to order so the wait can be over 10 minutes especially during lunch rush hour. Food: highly recommend their chicken karaage and hambagu with ponzu sauce. The chicken karaage is well marinated and moist. It’s a bit different from the typical chicken karaage. The batter is light and crispy. I believe they use cornstarch instead of flour. Also, they drizzle sweet and spicy Thai sauce along with a light mayo. They pair so WELL! The toss salad on the side is always fresh, clean, and crisp. I would also recommend their hambagu with ponzu sauce. It comes with an egg, a side of toss salad, and French fries. The ponzu sauce acidic citrusy taste makes the patty less greasy. It’s my go-to order. Just a bit sad that it’s only available on Thursdays and Fridays. Service: Always friendly service every time I go! Atmosphere: it’s only take-out, but there’s outdoor seating for you to eat.

You can't go wrong with the ahi special...it's my fave and because I work close by I find myself returning for more every few weeks. Very friendly service and it's nice that the seating is outdoors (with umbrellas). I shared a pic...it normally comes with rice but I customize my order with salad only.
