About
A Taste of Seoul in the Heart of Honolulu
Tucked away near the bustling streets of Honolulu, Ireh Restaurant serves as a reliable go-to for those seeking unpretentious, home-style Korean cooking. The space is modest and utilitarian, prioritizing the steaming bowls of comfort arriving at your table over elaborate interior design. It is the kind of neighborhood spot where the kitchen staff knows the regulars, and the clatter of stainless steel chopsticks against ceramic bowls provides a constant, rhythmic soundtrack to your lunch hour.
Signature Flavors and Kitchen Traditions
The menu leans heavily into soul-warming classics. Their Kimchi Jjigae arrives bubbling intensely in a stone pot, the scent of fermented spice and pork fat cutting through the air the moment it leaves the kitchen. Patrons frequently gravitate toward the assorted banchans, which change with the seasons and offer a sharp, pickled contrast to the richer, savory mains. Whether you are craving a hearty portion of Bibimbap topped with a perfectly fried egg or the deep, savory satisfaction of a traditional stew, the kitchen focuses on traditional techniques that emphasize bold, fermented flavors.
Practical Dining Tips
Because this location is popular with local workers during the midday rush, seating can feel intimate, and the room tends to get quite loud as the lunch crowd fills the tables. While the layout is straightforward, the service is efficient, designed for diners who value a quick, filling meal that hits the spot without unnecessary frills. If you are exploring the local food scene, this is a grounded, authentic choice for anyone looking to step away from the tourist-heavy dining districts and enjoy a meal that feels like it was cooked in a family kitchen.

During our vacation in Honolulu, we visited many Korean restaurants in the Ala Moana and Waikīkī areas, and this one has been our favorite. We originally planned to visit each restaurant only once so we could experience as many Korean restaurants as possible. However, we enjoyed this place so much that we came back for a second visit. The food is well prepared, and the staff (esp., the senior ones) are friendly and polite. Across our multiple visits, we tried veggie bibimbap (야채비빔밥), mul naengmyeon (물냉면), yeolmu naengmyeon (열무냉면), mushroom porridge (버섯죽), kimbap (김밥), and seafood noodle soup (해물칼국수). Every dish was excellent. We’ll likely return again before we leave so we can try more items from the menu. update: we came back for a third visit!

Helpful tips for foodies: Manu has maintained a very consistent flavor profile over the years, which is something I really appreciate. They even make their own gochujang sauce — and it’s excellent. The seafood pancake is my favorite dish. I highly recommend asking for it extra crispy, since this dish can be hit or miss depending on who’s cooking. I’ve noticed the dinner-time cook tends to use more batter, which sometimes makes it soggier with fewer visible vegetables and seafood. In my experience, lunch and early dinner are the best times to visit. The kitchen doesn’t feel as rushed, and the food seems to be prepared with more care and better balance. There is definitely a noticeable difference in taste depending on which cook is on duty.
