Imanas TEI Restaurant
About
A in the Heart of Honolulu
Tucked away from the main tourist drag, Imanas TEI serves as a quintessential local hub for those seeking authentic Japanese soul food. This isn't your typical sushi spot; it is a bustling, no-frills izakaya where the sound of clinking sake glasses and lively Japanese chatter fills the air. The interior is refreshingly unpretentious, prioritizing the communal joy of sharing plates over ornate decor.
Signature Flavors and Culinary Craft
The menu is anchored by their famous hot pot, which has gained a cult following among Honolulu locals for its comforting broth and generous portions of fresh vegetables and proteins. Regulars often start their meal with the buttery, charred texture of their grilled mackerel, followed by a variety of sashimi that emphasizes local sourcing. The kitchen staff moves with precision, ensuring that the steam rising from the shabu-shabu tables remains the center of attention.
What to Expect
If you plan on visiting, prepare for a tight squeeze; the layout is compact, and the energy level is high. While parking in this part of town can be a bit of a puzzle to solve, the payoff is a meal that feels like a home-cooked Japanese dinner. It is an ideal spot for friends looking to unwind after work or anyone wanting to experience a slice of Honolulu’s diverse culinary scene beyond the Waikiki strip. The lighting is dimmed just enough to make the transition from the bright Hawaii sun to a cozy evening meal feel seamless and inviting.

*update due to charged additional tip without authorization We left a $1 tip due to extremely poor service and wrote it clearly on the receipt. Later, the restaurant charged an additional 20% tip without authorization. This is not a service issue but a serious billing integrity concern. Please check your statements carefully if you dine here. *previous comment The service here was shockingly dismissive and reached a level of "cold treatment" I’ve never experienced before. Even after we patiently waited for a table, the staff treated us as if we were invisible: we were never offered water throughout the entire meal, and the server acted visibly annoyed while taking our order, leaving the menus piled on our table as if we weren’t even there. The most insulting moment occurred when we tried to calmly address these issues with a staff member; they literally turned their back and walked away while I was mid-sentence, showing zero interest in even hearing our feedback. This complete lack of basic human respect and hospitality is unacceptable, regardless of how busy a restaurant might be. It’s a real shame to see such an arrogant attitude in a place that supposedly represents Japanese culture. Save your money and go somewhere where the staff actually treats their guests with dignity.

Really good and such a solid sushi spot 🍣 I’ve always seen this place popping off with a line out the door so it peaked my interest. This was my first time and I got the wagyu nigiri which was good, but not the star. But the seafood?! Hello?! Delicious. I tried the 5-piece chef’s choice + sake which consisted of amberjack, mackerel, scallop, hamachi, uni nigiri and some of the fish literally melted in my mouth. Also got salmon, roe, and hamachi nigiri and all of them were delicious (imo hamachi was outstanding)! The karaage was hot and juicy on the inside, and crispy on outside. What I liked about this place is that they had great promos, a good sake selection, and super kind staff. Definitely try this place if you get a chance!

Ther servers were amazing! Very friends and welcoming! The fish melted in your mouth. I felt like they could have provided larger slices of the ahi. I had a lot of salmon, large slices of hamachi, and decent portions of mackerel, but the ahi sashimi slices were rather small in comparison. The oyster mushroom and scallop dynamite is a must try!

The food was average overall. The karaage was crispy and tasty, but the grilled fish had a noticeable fishy smell, which was disappointing. However, the service was below expectations. Out of five staff members, including the sushi chef, only one greeted us with a smile. The others remained expressionless throughout our visit and did not even offer basic greetings, which negatively affected the overall dining experience.

Excellent local japanese restaurant with a happy hour. $4 high balls? Yes please! Excellent quality fish. Especially loved the fried squid and chicken. Portions were filling. Sushi tasted fresh and got to try their spicy tuna. It’s a hidden gem with a terrible parking lot. Would come back
