Il Lupino Trattoria & Wine Bar
About
A Slice of Italy in the Heart of Waikiki
Located just steps from the sun-drenched sands of Waikiki, Il Lupino Trattoria & Wine Bar brings a sophisticated touch of Tuscany to Honolulu. Owned by Wolfgang Zwiener of the legendary Wolfgang’s Steakhouse, this open-air trattoria captures the essence of a classic European cafe, where the hum of tourists blends with the clinking of wine glasses under the island sun.
The Culinary Craft
The kitchen leans into authentic Italian techniques, offering a menu that highlights house-made pasta and vibrant, fresh ingredients. The signature Osso Buco is a standout, slow-braised until it falls away from the bone with the slightest nudge of a fork. For those who prefer a lighter start, the fresh burrata, paired with vine-ripened tomatoes and a drizzle of high-quality olive oil, provides a refreshing contrast to the humid Hawaiian afternoon.
Sip and Savor
True to its name, the wine list is expansive. Whether you are grabbing a quick glass after a day at the beach or settling in for a full dinner service, the bar staff is well-versed in Italian varietals. The atmosphere transitions smoothly from a bustling, bright breakfast spot in the morning to an intimate, candle-lit evening venue as the tropical breeze picks up.
Be prepared for the lively energy of the Royal Hawaiian Center; it is a popular thoroughfare, meaning you might find yourself people-watching amidst the high-end shopping crowd. It is a fantastic choice for those looking to swap out local poke for handmade tagliatelle without leaving the convenience of the Waikiki resort district. While the dining room remains elegant, the open-air layout means you will occasionally hear the vibrant street music filtering in from the surrounding plaza, adding to the unpretentious, social charm of the space.

After reading some of the reviews I was a bit concerned but it was fine. Our guests were locals and we booked an outside table which also meant we could see and hear the entertainment from the stage. A nice garden setting we ordered the large charcuterie board for starters. Nice selection of cheeses and prosciutto with biscuits. We also asked for French bread which was delivered with olive oil and balsamic. For dinner I ordered the Filet Mignon and it was melt in your mouth tender. The only thing I would suggest is perhaps some tasting notes alongside the wines because my German Reisling was definitely closer to a Moselle style. Friendly and attentive service made it an enjoyable evening with good company.

I was scared when I saw the reviews but it was better than expected. The food was not great, but it was still good. The gluten free pizza is ok, not the best, but definitely good. They didn't have gluten free pasta as they said they faced some supply problems in recent weeks. Other gluten free options were marked (but limited). We didn't have a problem with a long wait or ignoring servers - maybe we were lucky or maybe the restaurant fixed something after recent reviews.

Food was amazing and we were welcomed by a very kind and friendly host, Hoku. As well as a very attentive and helpful server, Jeremy. It was a dinner date with my girlfriend and was truly a wonderful experience. Hoku kindly escorted us to a beautiful table outside where we were able to view the sunset. When Jeremy came to take our order, my girlfriend was still deciding and was struggling to find what she wanted. So Jeremy did recommend some dishes for us, and the meal was absolutely amazing. Her fish piccata was very delicious. Very juicy with nicely buttered top layer that just melted in our mouth. When it comes to Italian cuisine, I always order an eggplant parmigiana, and it was one of the best ones I’ve ever had. Crisp and cheesy layer on the outside with soft eggplant inside really put a smile on my face. At the end of our meal, Jeremy recommended us a Tiramisu. And it was one of the best ones I’ve ever had as well. It was not only sweet and creamy, but the way it was presented was also what made the desert amazing as well.

I always enjoy my time spent at Il Lupino. They have a nice ambiance and the best servers. Especially Nicolai. The bartenders Allie and Killiam are so awesome! The food is amazing. It’s definitely worth a trip to waikiki.

The apps were great, wine selection is second to none (ask for full wine list they have more than the 47 bottle per glass list). My only complaint is that when they get busy they struggle with the large crowds and some times partial orders get delayed. Otherwise the quality of the food is very good.

We ate here twice because we thoroughly enjoyed it! The food was extremely flavourful just like Italian food is supposed to be! The truffle gnocchi was to die for! The men enjoyed their meat and said they were cooked brilliantly to their request and the charcuterie board selection was absolutely delicious! 🙌🏽 We would return in a heart beat! 👏🏽

This place was pretty good. The staff was great first off. The view was nice from where we were sitting outside. My husband had the lamb and I had the filet. They were both pretty good however I will say that I wasn't sure if they were good enough for what they cost. I thought it was a little overpriced for the food. I've had better honestly for a little cheaper. But overall it wasn't bad. I might still go back just because the staff was so great.

I understand that in the past they have had questionable quality. Even the concierge at the hotel said that too after we ate there. They have a new chef. All I can say is the Bolognese was probably the best I have tasted. My wife had the catch of the day, ahi, which she liked. Our server, Julian, was fantastic. On the negative side, their food is fully priced and on some of the wines I would say are over priced. We had a great time largely because our server. Give this restaurant a try.

Review is for happy hour only... dropped by one weekday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised to find we could order from the happy hour menu since they have liberal hours (noon to 6:30 pm daily). It’s an upscale Italian restaurant but unfortunately the quality of the food doesn’t match the great customer service or refined ambiance. The grilled octopus was overcooked past tenderness, the gnocchi was heavy rather than soft and pillowy and the sauces were just meh. You can find better happy hours with great drinks and food elsewhere just steps away in Waikiki.

We were able to seat in a beautiful part of the restaurant, on the patio outside towards the corner - lots of greenery & quite peaceful. The staff were very accommodating and helped us with a baby car that we had in tow. We ordered quite a lot of food as there were six of us - the general consensus was that two of the dishes were very good (recommend the spaghetti Bolognese) , two (the locomoco) tasted bland and that the rest were average. I had a Mai-Tai which was very well made
