A Slice of Tokyo in the Heart of Honolulu

Stepping into I-naba Hanalei'i feels like ducking out of the humid Hawaiian afternoon and into a quiet, focused workspace in Shinjuku. Located within the bustling Moiliili district, this spot sidesteps the typical tourist-heavy sushi traps, offering a refined, minimalist approach to Japanese cuisine that keeps the local crowd coming back.

The Art of the Omakase and Soba

Chef Yasuo I-naba’s reputation precedes him, and for good reason. The kitchen excels in the meticulous craft of hand-kneaded buckwheat soba noodles, which provide an earthy, textured contrast to the pristine, ocean-fresh sashimi platters. You’ll hear the rhythmic sound of knives against wooden boards as the chefs prepare seasonal nigiri, often sourced directly from local waters. The grilled items, particularly the salt-crusted fish, arrive with a charred aroma that cuts through the subtle notes of freshly grated wasabi.

Refined Dining with Local Character

The interior is understated, dominated by light wood tones and a hushed, contemplative energy that makes it ideal for an intimate dinner or a serious business lunch. It is a place where you go to actually hear your companion speak. Just a heads-up: the parking lot is famously tight, a classic Honolulu quirk that requires some patience or a quick search for street parking in the surrounding blocks. Whether you are craving the intricate precision of a carefully assembled sushi set or a bowl of traditional hot soba on a rare rainy day in town, I-naba remains a cornerstone for those who prioritize flavor and technique over flash.

Had the best first omakase experience! Great food and service. Chef Teru was super friendly! The lunch omakase is reasonably priced for the quality of the seafood they used. The lunch omakase was $78 and it came with 10pc nigiri, miso soup, and dessert. Highlights from the omakase were the mackerel, chutoro, otoro, uni, and scallop nigiri. The miso soup was pretty flavorful and not too salty. For dessert we ended with a yuzu sorbet which was really good 👍 super light and refreshing 🤩. Would definitely come here again 🤗

Had an exceptional tempura omakase lunch at Tempura inaba Hanalei'i, without a doubt the best tempura I had outside of Japan. The restaurant has a single, 8 or 10 seat counter, at the middle of which the chef prepares and serves the tempura. It is a few blocks away from the other inaba location which specializes in soba and is more casual. Highly recommend trying this one, it was the highlight of our trip!

Chef Kakazu is amazing and the food tastes absolutely delicious. This time it’s just me in this table, Chef Kakazu tries his best to make sure I have a great time by communicating with google translate since I don’t speak Japanese. I’m sure the experience is gonna be even better if you speak Japanese. Regardless, the food is amazing. The chef is polite, kind, skillful and the atmosphere is great.
