A Legacy of Prime Cuts in the Heart of Waikiki

Stepping into Hy's Steak House feels like entering a time capsule of classic Honolulu luxury. Tucked away from the modern glitz of Kalakaua Avenue, this institution has defined high-end dining for decades. The interior is defined by dark, polished mahogany, leather booths that swallow you whole, and the faint, unmistakable scent of kiawe wood smoke drifting from the open broiler.

The Kiawe Wood Difference

The soul of the kitchen is the custom-built broiler, where prime cuts of beef are seared over Hawaiian kiawe wood. This isn't just a steakhouse; it is a ritual. The signature dish—a dry-aged USDA Prime porterhouse—arrives with a deep, earthy char that you simply cannot replicate with gas or electric heat. Servers in tuxedo vests perform tableside preparations with surgical precision, including the theatrical flare of the classic Bananas Foster. The sound of the silver trolley clinking against plates is the soundtrack to an evening here.

Refined Elegance for Special Evenings

This is the spot for anniversaries, birthdays, or when you want to disappear from the world for a few hours. The lighting is intentionally dim, bordering on moody, which works perfectly for intimate conversations. It is worth noting that the dining room can get quite boisterous when the evening hits its stride, as the acoustics of the wood-paneled walls amplify the clink of glasses and lively chatter. You might find parking a bit of a challenge in this busy pocket of Waikiki, so plan for valet or an early arrival to ensure a smooth start to your meal. Whether you are a local celebrating a milestone or a visitor looking for the quintessential Hawaiian fine-dining experience, this room offers a level of service and culinary consistency that has held firm for generations.

If you’re looking for a classic Waikiki steakhouse experience that still feels special in a city packed with great dining options, dinner at Hy’s Steak House absolutely delivered for my wife and me. We finally had a babysitter for the night, so the goal was simple: enjoy an amazing steak dinner, great cocktails, and a rare quiet evening together. Hy’s exceeded expectations from start to finish. From the moment we walked in, T, Cameron, and Ransen made the experience feel elevated without ever feeling stuffy or overdone. T was especially attentive right away, making sure drinks were flowing and walking us through the specials, wine pairings, and recommendations with genuine enthusiasm and knowledge. You could tell the staff here truly enjoys what they do, and it made the entire dinner feel personal. Once they started describing the specials, our self-control disappeared quickly. We started with the fresh oysters and the scallop appetizer, both incredibly fresh and beautifully prepared. Perfect beginning to the meal. Of course, the main event was the steak. We came specifically for a great steak dinner and somehow still ended up overachieving by ordering both the A5 Miyazaki Wagyu and the house Delmonico ribeye. Both could probably satisfy two people on their own, but no regrets whatsoever. The Wagyu was rich, buttery, and melt-in-your-mouth decadent, while the Delmonico delivered that perfectly seasoned, hearty steakhouse flavor you crave. Having both side by side honestly made for a pretty unforgettable dinner. Cocktail-wise, the Green River and Ichigo were both fantastic and paired surprisingly well with the richness of the meal. Just when we thought we were done, Ransen convinced us to try the Apple Streusel Flambé for dessert, and I’m very glad he did. Watching it prepared tableside was part of the fun, and it ended up being the perfect warm, sweet finish to the night. Great service can completely change a dining experience, and this team absolutely made the night memorable. Between the attentive staff, phenomenal steaks, strong cocktails, and classic steakhouse atmosphere, Hy’s reminded us why date nights are worth savoring. Highly recommend for anyone wanting a true special occasion dinner in Waikiki.

As many others have stated, the A5 Wagyu is incredible. So buttery, juicy, soft, and tasty. Cooked to perfection. The filet mignon was tasty as well, just a step below the A5. The service was top notch and you can tell they pride themselves in providing the best service for their guests. Special shoutout to Romnick and Mana who were our servers and provided excellent service. The table side preparations of the salad and dessert that we received were incredible and the food tasted amazing. The Caesar salad was so good and it was interesting and a unique experience to watch them prepare it right in front of you. Same for the flambés dessert, apple streusel was amazing. Complementary valet service was also a nice touch. 10/10.

Every trip we take to Oahu (8 times by last count) is always capped off with an exquisite meal at Hy’s Steakhouse. This review doesn’t come close to how delicious the food is and how attentive the staff are! My favorite item hands-down is the beef Wellington. The meat is always cooked to perfection, and along with the puff pastry and foie gras accompaniment is just *chefs kiss*. My husband and I always order the table side Caesar salad, and the flambé desserts are always exceptional! Whenever we leave we just can’t wait to come back! We’ve gone as a couple, with friends, and also as a large group, and we’ve never been disappointed. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!

My 6th time or so coming here and we usually tell people to come here for a great meal. Sadly this time was....not good The Food: The bread basket - was frankly the second best thing we ate that night. All 3 of us ordered the Legacy Pre-Fixe menu (one with pairings) 3 x French onion dip - Everyone enjoyed. 2 x Hy's Caesar salad - was frankly better than anything else on my main course other than the steak. 1 x Warm Spinach - Was quite tasty 2 x beef wellington - Was quite good as always, even if the steak was a little..cool 1 x Surf and Turf (Filet Mignon) - The lobster was better than the steak by alot.....the mignon was tender but had very little in the way of flavor. 2 x baked potato - These were the saddest potatoes ever, and tasted like they had been microwaved for to long. At least the sour cream was plentiful and helped cover the taste of the potato. 1 x Mashed potatoes - Extremely bland....Also asked the waiter what makes them Hy Mashed potatoes.....he said oh they are just mashed potatoes, proceeded to show him the menu where they say specifically " HY's Mashed Potatoes". The poor sad, bland, chewy veggies - None of us ate them The Flambe' oh how this star as fallen, used to be one of my favorite desserts. First the waiter messed up and one person at our table can't have any alcohol...so they made 2 x chocolate lovers They later went and got him a piece of cake (10 minutes later) 1 x Apple Streusel The sauce was ok, but way more liquid than it used to be (and tasted...processed). The poor ice cream....i don't know what they changed, but none of us enjoyed it. Tasted like they but so much milk fat into it...it left a film that took a day to go away in our mouths. The service...is usually where HY's shines.....not tonight. Waiter told us wrong information several times. Wife went with the premium paring because it had the sake and a dessert paring...which he later told us had neither and she wouldn't be getting them. None of the parings came out the same time as the food. Had to flag him down 4 separate times to fix orders or request the pairings be brought out. Sadly i feel this is the end of my visits and recommendations to people for dinner at Hy's.

What a wonderful restaurant to have memorable nights with your loved ones. Their A5 Wagyu was spectacular and cooked to perfected medium rare. This steak at a great price and our experience was further elevated by their foie gras complementing the steak. Other items pictured include rack of lamb, lobster, crab legs, crab cakes, foie gras (two different preparations from two different nights), bread. The Caesar salad was prepared right in front of us adding to the experience. Our server was Vincent and he took very good care of us. Will be coming back next month for sure.

Hy’s still has the feel of being local and not being a “chain” (even though it is now). An upscale dining experience where the gill master can be seen cooking - one of whom has worked at Hy’s for over 40 years. Excellent selection of wine and the staff are top notch. There is a dress code, but it is simple (men must have shirts with collars and closed toe shoes for instance). Our dinners were repaired perfectly. We were dinning late, and the restaurant was only about 1/3 full as the night was winding down. We were not rushed and it was easy to talk. We had made reservations in advance, and it is recommended.

Very good food, really good service, price is probably $10-15 over per person based on all things considered. We'd surely still come back for specials and would love to try Happy Hour or the Breakfast. I did see a few people wearing shorts, which seemed weird due to dress code and it made the restaurant seem less formal. There were salt and pepper shakers on the table, at this price point I did not expect to see that being that most high-end restaurants season the food as it should be. The tableside salad was very nice to see and tasted very fresh. The macaroni and cheese with crab tasted okay, but the crab seemed like an afterthought opposed to being integrated into the dish. The Beef Wellington was AMAZING! 🤌 The tableside drink tasted very good and the smoke created a really cool experience and reminded us of a campfire. The restaurant did an perfect job catering to our children 👏 😍 thank you!

Hy’s Steak House in Waikiki delivers a classic steakhouse experience with a level of refinement that still feels special even by Waikiki standards. The prime steaks are expertly cooked with a perfect balance of char and tenderness, while the tableside Caesar salad and flambéed desserts add a sense of old-school elegance without feeling dated. Service is attentive and polished, contributing to a relaxed yet upscale atmosphere that works equally well for celebrations or a memorable dinner after a day in Waikiki. It’s a place where quality, consistency, and tradition come together seamlessly.

Our best dinner experience in Oahu this year. The aged porterhouse grilled over traditional Hawaiian Kiawe wood made the steak extra flavorful. Our servers were uber amazing and they seated us where the Obamas usually sit when they visit. Just the perfect dinner to end our trip in Oahu.
