Hula Dog - Hawaiian Style Hot Dog
About
A Tropical Twist on the Classic Frankfurter
Forget everything you know about standard ballpark franks. Tucked away in the heart of Honolulu, Hula Dog reimagines the American hot dog with a distinctly Pacific flair. Instead of a standard bun, each dog is encased in a signature hollowed-out Hawaiian sweet bread, toasted to a golden, crunchy perfection on a custom-made steel spike. It is a handheld engineering marvel designed to prevent spills while you navigate the bustling city sidewalks.
Customized Flavor Profiles
The experience here is hands-on and highly personalized. You pick your protein—options include original polish sausage, veggie, or spicy hot—and then customize it with a variety of exotic fruit-based sauces. The star of the show is the lilikoi mustard, which offers a sharp, tangy zip that cuts through the savory richness of the meat. If you prefer a bit of heat, the mango habanero provides a lingering warmth that pairs surprisingly well with the airy, pillowy interior of the toasted loaf.
The Honolulu Street Scene
This is a fast-casual operation built for convenience. You will likely find yourself standing on the pavement, wiping a bit of garlic lemon sauce from your chin as local commuters hurry past. It is loud, it is breezy, and it captures the unpretentious essence of island snacking. While the limited counter space can get crowded during peak lunch hours, the turnover is lightning fast. Whether you are grabbing a quick bite before heading to Waikiki Beach or just wandering through the commercial district, it serves as the ultimate high-energy refuel. Grab a cup of fresh-squeezed lemonade, find a sliver of shade, and enjoy a messy, satisfying taste of authentic Honolulu street food.

10/10, heard it was the best hot dog in Oahu and we 100% agree.. maybe even better than the puka dogs we had in Kauai and that’s saying something. Not just this but the owner is so personable and makes sure you enjoy your experience. (One of the nicest people we’ve met so far) My boyfriend was skeptical to try the mango relish over the pineapple relish but the owner suggested it and it was damn good. These corn heads approve, go get a hula dog from him asap!!

Get the signature poi dog. You won’t regret it. It’s a spicy and sweet combo on a juicy polish dog with taro bun! Only minor complaint is it’s a $10.50 a dog! It is Hawaii, so for the specialty flavors (lilikoi, pineapple, papaya…), it is still worth it. Food truck in a parking lot. Don’t miss the pull in off the Main Street. Parking is free. Benches covered for eating.

Visited for lunch mid week in Jan. Highly unglamorous location. Friendly, warm, accommodating service from manager. Incredibly tasty hot dogs. Prices excellent.

Hula Dog! Best hot dog I’ve ever had! It was seriously sooooo good! The hot dog is nestled in your choice of a Hawaiian sweet bread or taro bread bun. Next, choose between a traditional Polish sausage (so yummy!) or a veggie dog. Then you handpick your desired toppings, ranging from roasted garlic lemon sauce to tropical relishes (mango, papaya, coconut, pineapple) and mustards like the tangy lilikoi (passion fruit) mustard which was just wow. If you’re ever in Hawaii, go and look for the Hula Dog food truck. The flavours of the hot dog, the delicious soft bread and all the flavour bombs of the sauces just work so well together. I can’t wait to go back. Oh, the lemonade was very refreshing too!

Today I got to try their Polish Dog with Coconut/Pineapple Lemon Juice and "Wow" they were great, very tasty. It was the best tasting Polish Dog/Hot Dog I have tasted. Also, the owner was very friendly and helpful.

Wow. This is not just a hot dog stand. I was was skeptical because hot dogs are not usually something I go for but this hands down is the best and will be on our itinerary every time we come back to Hawaii. The cashier was friendly, the bread as tasty as any Hawaiian roll. The toppings really make the dog though. Flavorful and surprising. You don’t expect the flavors to go well together but they do!

I read about these hot dogs years ago and it was a must taste for our trip to Honolulu. Bread was fresh and delicious. I got the medium garlic lemon sauce with Hawaiian mustard and pineapple relish. All beef dog was juicy and perfectly complemented by the sauces and mustard. Being able to eat a hot dog with lots of sauces without getting all over me was a special treat. I saw that Anthony Boudain (RIP) had visited their stand in the past and was impressed as well. Toasting a whole loaf(similar to an unsliced hoagie roll) on a spike made for a unique experience. I’m only sorry I didn’t get a photo before I took a bite. Sooo worth the wait!

Never had a dog like this before! Lots of options. The dog and bread were both fantastic. The sauce was a bit spicy for my taste, even mild, though my wife enjoyed it just fine. Get a drink too! There is a large covered area here with tables to eat at. The man working here was super cool and even helped us get some quick photos beside the cart.
