An Airy Escape Above Waikiki

Perched overlooking the lively Kalakaua Avenue corridor, Herringbone offers a bright, open-air concept that feels like a sophisticated beach house. The space leans heavily into a 'fish-meats-field' philosophy, surrounding guests with lush greenery and high ceilings that filter in the soft Hawaiian sunlight. It is the kind of spot where the ambient hum of Honolulu’s energy meets a relaxed, tropical sophistication, making it a prime choice for sunset cocktails or a celebratory dinner with a group.

The Flavors of the Pacific

Chef Brian Malarkey’s influence shines through in the menu’s dedication to fresh, line-caught seafood and locally sourced Hawaiian produce. The Whole Snapper, often prepared with a crisp, salted crust and fragrant herbs, stands as the centerpiece of their coastal culinary identity. If you visit, the oyster selection is consistently brisk and briny, paired best with their signature botanical cocktails. The transition from day to night here is seamless—the lighting dims, and the open-concept bar area becomes the focal point, buzzing with the sound of shakers and conversation.

A Few Things to Know Before You Go

While the atmosphere is breezy and inviting, note that the popularity of this International Market Place location means the dining room can get quite energetic during peak evening hours. Parking in the surrounding blocks requires a bit of patience, but the proximity to the beach makes it an easy stroll once you have tucked the car away. It is an ideal setting for those who appreciate a menu that balances refined seafood techniques with the casual, laid-back spirit of the island.

I wouldn’t say it was wow, but it wasn’t bad — it was tasty. Though in my opinion, the prices are a bit too high for the regular menu.

Anything made by the Aoki family seems to have junk tasting food. This place is definitely a tourist trap. Food was mid and I’m embarrassed if people think all of Hawaii tastes like this. Either things were over salted or just plain bland. Its saving grace is they have great service and a nice environment. (I didn’t photograph all of the dinner items, but none tasted decent anyway.)

Amazing place! Greeted with a warm welcome and upheld that attitude throughout our whole dinner. Waiter was attentive and quick. Appetizer came out quickly followed by our main course. Environment was slightly dim and had quite a beautiful interior/wall of plants/flowers. My friend and I ended up getting the pasta and the tuna steak with mashed potatoes. Both were absolutely delicious and warm right out of the kitchen. Would definitely recommend this place especially if you are looking for a nice and elegant place to enjoy a good meal! Thank you!

worst service ever. Went in around 430pm. The server james took our initial order and never saw him again. No checking up on us, drink refill or additional food order. No contact at all from him. Had to hunt down the receptionist just for the check. Too bad food was actually decent. Would have ordered more if wasn’t forgotten/ignored for an hour. Negative ⭐️

Went for a date night on our trip and the service was fantastic. The lobster roll is something I’ll remember for the rest of my life in the server and the bus person. We’re so polite and so thoughtful. Definitely want to go back if I’m ever in Waikiki again such a warm and welcoming atmosphere and one of the best public restrooms I’ve been in.

We came to this restaurant, which has a very good rating, to try the oysters. At first everything seemed quite nice. The only small things we noticed were slightly loud music and dim lighting, but those are minor details. We ordered wine along with seafood and oysters. About 10 minutes later the seafood arrived, but the wine had not. After another 5 minutes we were informed that the wine we ordered was not available, so we chose a different one. Around 10 minutes later the manager came and told us that the second wine was also unavailable. I mentioned that this was already the second time and that oysters without wine at a place like this feels a bit unusual. The response felt a little dismissive, which was slightly disappointing. The second thing was the lobster. Unfortunately, the taste was rather bland and not quite what we expected. Considering that dinner here is about $85 per person (without wine), we were hoping to leave a bit more satisfied. Overall, the place has potential and a good atmosphere, but the experience could be improved with better communication about the wine availability and a bit more attention to the food quality.

I wasn’t impressed, their other restaurants are so much better! For a seafood restaurant, definitely don’t order the oysters. They were terrible. The desserts were delicious so a couple of stars. The rest of the food was disappointing.

My husband and I did not have Valentine's day reservations so we're so excited that we were able to grab a table here for dinner! From the hostess to our main server, service was outstanding. And our food as well. We ordered crab legs and fish of the day. To add the ambience was magical and so perfect for a romantic Valentine's evening.

Decent spot for happy hour The food was average for this price range, hit and miss. But the ingredients taste fresh which is good. My favorite surprisingly was the vegan risotto. The staff are super helpful and the atmosphere is nice

The atmosphere at Herringbone is top notch - you'd never know you're inside a busy mall! The ambiance and the service really made dinner feel relaxing. However, the food was really hit or miss, and the menu inconsistencies between online, in print, and verbal were so disappointing. They didn't have several things that were listed online (including the dinner my husband wanted) and didn't have the dessert that I wanted to go here for - it's still listed on both the online and restaurant menus, but the waiter told us it's discontinued. If we'd known what was actually on the menu, we'd probably have skipped going here. 5/5 Drinks - both the cocktails and mocktails are flavourful and fun 5/5 Wagyu hot stone - we loved this! Small portions of course (it's a small appetizer), but the flavour was so good 2/5 American wagyu - this was not cooked rare as ordered, and was kind of so-so. Unfortunate since it wasn't cheap. My husband didn't want to waste food by having it remade but it was so disappointing 3/5 Brussels sprouts - very oily, not a lot of flavour 4/5 Bone marrow - very tiny portion but great flavour 3/5 Misoyaki butterfish - pretty standard and the bok choy is a great addition. I didn't love it, but it was good. The shrimp dumplings were the highlight of the dish for sure Overall we enjoyed the setting for dinner a lot but for a $200 meal I expected it to be better - and especially for the steak to be cooked as ordered
