About

A Legacy of Island Elegance

Stepping onto the terrace at Hau Tree, you are immediately greeted by the sprawling branches of the historic hau tree that has sheltered diners at this Kaimana Beach landmark for generations. Located right where the Gold Coast meets the quiet edge of Waikiki, the restaurant offers an open-air escape where the rhythmic sound of crashing waves provides the constant soundtrack to your meal.

The Essence of Coastal Cuisine

The menu highlights local ingredients with a modern flair. The signature Hau Tree Eggs Benedict is a perennial favorite, often paired with a morning mimosa as the sun reflects off the Pacific. As the day transitions into evening, the kitchen shifts focus toward fresh catches and seasonal preparations that capture the spirit of Oahu. You might smell the faint, salty breeze mixing with the aroma of searing ahi or citrus-infused dressings coming from the kitchen.

Refined Atmosphere by the Shore

This space is perfectly suited for those looking to experience Honolulu beyond the typical tourist bustle. It feels intimate, classic, and unhurried. One thing to note: the open-air layout means you will be fully immersed in the elements, which adds to the charm but might require a light layer if the evening breeze picks up. Parking in the surrounding neighborhood can be a bit of a puzzle during peak hours, so plan for a short stroll through the scenic park nearby to soak in the views before you arrive. Whether you are catching up over brunch or settling in for a sunset dinner, the focus remains on the seamless connection between the table and the horizon.

Get a reservation well in advance. We booked a Friday night a few weeks out and could not get anything later than 5:00. Sunset wasn't until 7:15. We were in the blazing heat, but they did give is fans to fan ourselves. The food was really good and the drinks were great as well! I'm not a big fan of eggplant, but eggplant appetizer was amazing! The hamachi was really good too! All the servers were very friendly and knowledgeable.

Food and atmosphere were great. Got the shakshuka and Benedict. Flavors were vibrant. The cold brew coffee was excellent and very strong/fresh. A little pricey but that’s Hawaii for you. Wish the shakshuka had more than one egg. Was not staying in the hotel but came for breakfast one day. Got sat quickly, wasn’t really busy but took a long time to see a server. They were quite friendly and got everything we needed, maybe just newer or something. Overall good experience.

We came here for our honeymoon dinner and it was really worth it. The food all tasted great and very unique flavors. We shared everything. The waiter was also great I wish I remembered his name. He sent us a guava cake for the special occasion which was very thoughtful. The view is also unbeatable as well. Dinner right by the ocean is great. Got to enjoy the sunset as well during the meal.

I made an Opentable Sunday brunch reservation and requested a table against the wall next to the beach (which we received), and indicated we were there for our anniversary. Great venue and good food. We parked across the street for 3 hours of parking for $1.44 on a Sunday (it is free until 10am on Sun). We started with a cinnamon roll ($16/ea) and two different Mai Tias ($19/ea). With the cinnamon roll being the standout item. Both Mai Tias were good but I would stick with the Waikiki Mai Tai over the 1944 Mai Tai. Next we ordered a fish sandwich ($27) and a burger ($28). The fish sandwich was unique-enough and tasty. The burger was nothing special. Both came with McDonald skinny fries. Seeing some of the brunch items around me, I’d do a benedict and some other breakfast item next time and skip the sandwiches. The burger is on HH for $20 which better aligns with its presentation and fries. We got a complementary slice of cake and two glasses of champagne for our anniversary celebration. The waiter was excellent. Overall I would return, just make some different decisions to elevate the experience.

Try Hau Tree for a more intimate and relaxed dining experience. The beautiful Hau tree with its warm lanterns creates a beautiful ambiance. The service is friendly and non-intrusive. Would be a great date night or fine for a family. The food was truly excellent and featured unique dishes with local fresh ingredients. Try the rainbow caviar appetizer and the pistou chicken pasta for something different. The Waikiki Mai Tai was our favorite mai tai in Waikiki. Definitely a must try for anyone looking for delicious food in a beautiful setting outside of the typical tourist destinations in Waikiki.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We had a wonderful dinner at Hau Tree! The food was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented, and the oceanfront setting made the evening extra special. It’s also a great spot for families — our toddler loved her meal and enjoyed watching the boats go by. Such a relaxing, baby-friendly place with amazing service. Highly recommend for a lovely dinner by the water! ✨
