Hanapa'a Market
About
A Neighborhood Hub for Fresh Island Flavors
Stepping into Hanapa'a Market in the heart of Honolulu feels like hitting the jackpot for those who crave authentic, no-frills Hawaiian staples. This isn't your polished, tourist-heavy eatery; it is a straightforward, bustling spot where locals grab their daily fix of ultra-fresh poke. The scent of shoyu, sesame oil, and ocean-brine hits you the moment you walk through the door, usually accompanied by the lively hum of regulars chatting at the counter.
The Poke Standard
The star of the show is undeniably the fresh-caught fish, prepared daily with a level of precision that honors traditional Hawaiian preparation. You will find a variety of styles, from the classic limu-dusted ahi to spicy versions that carry a genuine kick. The texture of the fish is consistently buttery, a direct reflection of the market’s sourcing practices in the Pacific waters surrounding Oahu. It is a grab-and-go heaven for beach-bound travelers or office workers looking for a healthy, high-protein lunch.
Local Nuances
While the quality of the raw fish is impeccable, keep in mind that this is a true market environment. The footprint is cozy, and during the midday rush, the space can get quite tight as people shuffle toward the refrigerated cases. Parking can occasionally be a bit of a dance in the surrounding area, but the trade-off is the access to grab-and-go sides, locally sourced snacks, and beverages that pair perfectly with a sunset picnic at a nearby park. If you appreciate a place that prioritizes the quality of the catch over expensive interior design, this Honolulu gem is exactly where you want to be.

A hidden gem. I went to the store in the Koko / Hanauma Bay area. This was easily the best poke I've ever had. Their plate lunches are an absolute steal in terms of quality and quantity. Had I known of this place when I was planning my trip, I would have found accommodations in this area instead! Get some malasadas from the nearby Leonard's truck after your meal.

Walked in and got a ahi lunch plate. Ahi tuna three ways. My plate weighed at least 5lbs. Rice, tuna, kimchi, pickled daikon and ginger. Quintessential Hawaiian meal. Delicious

Both poke and fish dip were phenomenal!!! I think we waited like 5 minutes for our bowls. Will definitely come back when I get to visit the island again.

The best poke you can get! They even weigh the fish or tako before adding all of the onions so you get more seafood, so thoughtful. They have the best flavors that you cannot find elsewhere like the garlic or miso. So ono (delicious)! We also love the misoyaki salmon which you can even get as a salad.

Seemed like everyone came in pointed at the poke bowl sign on the wall and ordered that. We ordered 2 plates instead: the Ahi Fever (which in hindsight we could have shared) and the Furikake Seared Ahi Plate. You know how the photos can look so much better than the actual food? This is not the case at this food joint. The food is spectacularly presented and is high-quality and fresh, fresh, fresh. What also surprised me is that the rice options were white, brown or sushi rice. Whoa, I need to come back and get a poke bowl on bed of sushi rice and try those amazing toppings. We will definitely be back. The seating is a bit limited and we were blessed to score the table for 2 in the corner in spite of the busy lunch rush.

Holy salt seas as the salmon was very seasoned with the ocean I couldn’t taste the fish past the salt. I really was hoping it was going to be good being a bit pricey but we’re in Hawaii Kai so it’s expected but I was so disappointed. The poi helped subside the over amount of salt that was added to flavor the salmon. I did add the cucumber to help balance the saltiness.

OMG I’m in poke heaven. Came here for lunch with 7 people. Everything was so delicious - fresh & tasty. Portions were generous. I can eat their food everyday, so good. Ahi Fever box, Tako bowl, salmon bowl, ahi bowl, etc.
