About
A Slice of Tokyo in the Heart of Kaimuki
Stepping into Hanale feels less like entering a typical restaurant and more like slipping into a quiet corner of a Tokyo neighborhood. Located in the bustling Kaimuki district, this spot focuses on the precision of Japanese home-style cooking. The air inside is often thick with the savory, soy-based steam of simmering nabe, punctuated by the sharp, rhythmic clinking of ceramic bowls against polished wooden tables.
The Culinary Focus
The kitchen here avoids the flashiness found in Waikiki tourist hubs, choosing instead to lean into the concept of Oden. You will find broth that has been carefully developed over hours, creating a depth of flavor that coats the tongue. Their signature take on traditional Japanese comfort food centers on seasonal vegetables and meticulously prepared proteins. If you are looking for an intimate dinner where the food takes center stage rather than a booming bass track, this is your destination.
What to Expect
The space is intentionally compact, which lends to a communal, albeit close, dining experience. Don't be surprised if you end up brushing shoulders with the table next to you—it is part of the charm of the local Honolulu dining scene. Because the seating is limited, prime dinner hours can get competitive, so expect a bit of a wait if you arrive during the peak evening rush. The lighting is dimmed low, creating a sanctuary that feels miles away from the intense tropical sun just outside the door. For those who appreciate a quiet, deliberate approach to dining, Hanale offers a refined retreat that prioritizes the integrity of each ingredient served.

Had the best first omakase experience! Great food and service. Chef Teru was super friendly! The lunch omakase is reasonably priced for the quality of the seafood they used. The lunch omakase was $78 and it came with 10pc nigiri, miso soup, and dessert. Highlights from the omakase were the mackerel, chutoro, otoro, uni, and scallop nigiri. The miso soup was pretty flavorful and not too salty. For dessert we ended with a yuzu sorbet which was really good 👍 super light and refreshing 🤩. Would definitely come here again 🤗

Had an exceptional tempura omakase lunch at Tempura inaba Hanalei'i, without a doubt the best tempura I had outside of Japan. The restaurant has a single, 8 or 10 seat counter, at the middle of which the chef prepares and serves the tempura. It is a few blocks away from the other inaba location which specializes in soba and is more casual. Highly recommend trying this one, it was the highlight of our trip!

Chef Kakazu is amazing and the food tastes absolutely delicious. This time it’s just me in this table, Chef Kakazu tries his best to make sure I have a great time by communicating with google translate since I don’t speak Japanese. I’m sure the experience is gonna be even better if you speak Japanese. Regardless, the food is amazing. The chef is polite, kind, skillful and the atmosphere is great.
