About
A Vantage Point Above Fort Shafter
Perched on the rolling hills of the historic Fort Shafter complex, Hale Ikena offers more than just a meal; it provides a commanding perspective of the Honolulu skyline and the shimmering Pacific beyond. The name itself, meaning House with a View, holds true the moment you step through the entrance. The dining room features expansive glass panes that turn the midday sun into a warm, golden glow across the tables, highlighting the polished wood interiors.
Savoring Local Traditions
The culinary focus here centers on robust, familiar favorites that cater to the military community and local residents alike. Whether you are stopping in for their well-regarded brunch buffet or a quiet lunch, the menu leans into comfort. You will find staples like prime rib that commands attention and a selection of fresh island-inspired sides that emphasize the regional flavors of Oahu. The sound of silverware clinking against porcelain mixes with the steady hum of conversation, creating a relaxed environment suitable for professional luncheons or slow weekend gatherings.
Refined Nuances
While the atmosphere remains professional and orderly, be prepared for the security checkpoints common to the area—it is a small trade-off for the privacy and tranquility found on these grounds. If you find yourself in the central Honolulu area and need a reprieve from the tourist crowds of Waikiki, the winding roads leading up to this vantage point are well worth the travel. It is a space where the pace of the island slows down, allowing diners to appreciate the greenery of the Koolau Mountains while enjoying a hearty meal served with traditional hospitality.

Open and clean atmosphere. Great staff. Bar available. They even allowed us to stay about 20 minutes after our time was up to accomodate late comers. Food was excellent too. Open to the public every Sunday.

Although it's on military property, anyone can make reservations here. I've only been to their breakfast buffet and it's pretty good for the price. It's a great place for family gatherings, parties, or events. The ambiance is nice, especially if you can get a table outside. Probably the only thing that is a headache is having to check in with your license, insurance, registration and safety check.
