Grill Your Way Through Waikiki

Located in the heartbeat of Waikiki, Gyu-Kaku offers a hands-on approach to Japanese dining that turns dinner into an event. The air inside is thick with the savory, charcoal-scented steam of searing meats, a distinct departure from the breezy salt air just a few blocks away. It is an ideal spot for groups who want to control the pace of their meal, provided you don't mind the occasional flare-up on the tabletop grill or the energetic, high-decibel chatter of a busy Friday night.

Signature Bites and Shared Plates

The menu focuses on the Yakiniku style, where thin-cut proteins arrive raw and ready for the grate. Their Harami Skirt Steak and Kalbi Short Rib are staples, often arriving marinated in a sweet, soy-based tare that caramelizes instantly against the heat of the fire. The process is tactile—you flip your own beef, manage the temperature of the mesh grill, and balance the richness with sides like their signature Gyu-Kaku Salad or a bubbling pot of kimchi tofu chigae. While the seating can feel a bit cozy as the space fills up, the lively atmosphere makes it a go-to for those seeking a communal, high-energy dinner experience in the middle of Honolulu's most iconic tourist district.

Practical Dining Tips

Expect a wait during peak hours, as this spot is a favorite for both locals and travelers. The staff is quick to cycle through grill replacements, keeping the service moving even when the room is packed. If you are coming from one of the nearby resorts, prepare for the bustling street noise to follow you right to the front door, though once the first round of meat hits the charcoal, the focus shifts entirely to the plate.

Great japanese BBQ in a little bit of a hole in the wall location in the heart of Waikiki. Wide selection of quality meats and veggies in addition to Japanese staples like various noodles and fried foods. Food was good but the tables are a little tight and the overall restaurant is small.

I went here with a couple of friends late the other night. The restaurant was very communicative about the fact that we would be arriving close to the end of their all you can eat time. Our server, Kiana, was THE nicest waitress I’ve ever encountered at one of these “all you can eat” restaurants. The service was amazing, and the food was delicious! Would highly recommend.

Surprisingly this was a good place for us vegetarians. Didn't use the grill at all, but ended up having our fill on sushi and other stuff.

Wow! First time to a Japanese BBQ and could not recommend it enough. We had the "all you can eat 45". So many great options, I could have stayed there all day. Service was incredibly prompt, with the first few items of our order presented to us within 2 minutes of ordering them. Definitely on the pricer side, but we'll well worth it. They had a great list of locally inspired drinks, and next time I will have to try their Sake Flights. Can't recommend highly enough!

I’ve visited this Gyu-Kaku many times during my trips to Hawaii, and the food never disappoints. It always makes me want to come straight here whenever I’m at Hawaii. Fortunately, there’s a location near my home in my country, but the savoury taste and atmosphere there just don’t compare. It doesn’t capture that authentic Hawaiian Gyu-Kaku experience the way this one does

I have been having cravings for Yakiniku for almost 20 years. This really hit the spot. We got the 2 item lunch special. It was theright amount of food. The food was good. The homemade sauces were wonderful. The staff was helpful. Would totally recommend!

I was hungry and don’t eat a lot but that was perfect for me and my Fiancée. We ordered from the Premium menu first- Great move! The premium sirloin, Harami Skirt steak, Beef Tongue, then ordered from the menu on first page- Umakara Ribeye. Also from the Premium steak again with the Kalbi Chuck Rib, and the Bistro Hanger Steak. 🥩 All very tender and delicious! The Beef Shukiyaki Rice was delicious too. 🤤

The food featured average-quality meat, and I couldn’t believe they charged extra for the kimchi—it was very sour and not fresh at all, costing almost $7! The salad and chicken appetizer were good, and the rice tasted acceptable. However, the service was disappointing, as they forgot several items we ordered.

We went for lunch and it exceeded our expectations. ***20% kama’aina discount at lunch, 15% at dinner!*** The lunch special is 2 items for $18/3 for $23, includes miso soup, Japanese salad, and a bowl of rice. Tons of food! Lots of meat! Lots of upgrade options, but the regular lunch items are delicious. We upgraded 2/3 of our meat options, added a few veggies, and got the garlic fried rice (which comes in a hot pot, so the rice got crispy on the bottom!). Taylor was our waitress and she was very friendly, helpful, and professional. Service was super fast. The restaurant is very clean, comfortable, and conveniently located.
