Grill Your Own Flavor in Honolulu

Located right in the heart of the Kapiolani corridor, Gyu-Kaku offers a hands-on approach to Japanese dining that transforms a standard meal into a social event. As soon as you step inside this Honolulu outpost, the rhythmic clatter of tongs against ceramic and the faint, savory aroma of charcoal-fired beef greet you. The atmosphere is high-energy and modern, characterized by warm lighting and a distinctively bustling pace that makes it a favorite for celebratory groups and after-work gatherings.

The Art of Yakiniku

The menu centers on the Japanese practice of yakiniku—grilling bite-sized portions of meat over an open flame built directly into your table. The Harami Skirt Steak and the Filet Mignon are consistent menu standouts, pairing beautifully with their signature sweet and savory tare dipping sauces. You will find that the servers are incredibly efficient at keeping the embers hot, though the layout of the dining room can get a bit snug during peak dinner hours, creating a close-knit, communal feel among diners.

Local Dining Tips

This spot is ideal for those who enjoy controlling their own culinary destiny. Don't be shy about ordering the Gyu-Kaku Salad as a crisp, refreshing counterpoint to the richer, marbled cuts of beef. While parking near the Kapiolani blocks can occasionally require a bit of patience, the reward of searing your own premium meats to a perfect medium-rare is well worth the effort. Whether you are craving a late-night bite or a structured dinner with friends, this space provides a dependable, interactive experience that has become a staple for locals across the Oahu capital.

Located on Kapoolani Blvd, this spot offers a warm, family-friendly vibe 🌺, complete with a welcoming staff. I savored the 🦐 shrimps, 🧄 garlic noodles, and 🔥 spicy tofu Chigae Soup – all at prices that won't break the bank, given Hawaii's expensive lifestyle.

Absolutely love Gyu-Kaku! The food is always amazing, the atmosphere is fun, and the staff is consistently friendly and hardworking. Everyone really hustles to make sure you have a great experience. As someone who has to avoid gluten, I was pleasantly surprised by how many gluten-free options they offer. They were also very accommodating and able to modify some dishes to make them gluten-free, which I really appreciated. The garlic rice is hands down my favorite and a must-order every time I visit. Great food, great service, and a great overall experience. Highly recommend!

Ok, where do I start? Spectacular service. On time with my reservation. Server, Cameryn, was back up by Henry. Both, were on point with service. I think I waited 3 minutes before she brought menus and was very apologetic. They were very busy, so 3 minutes was not an issue but I appreciated the sentiment. Cameryn had recommendations that were right on, thanks you. During service everything showed up very quickly and anything we needed was being presented without asking. A WELL OILED MACHINE is how they worked ❤️. They made the night out with my wife so special. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a tasty meal with excellent service. 😋

Lunch special buffet price is really quite a deal. Prepare to stuff yourself with delicacies - angus beef rib and spicy pork were our favorites. It doesn’t have all the supreme offerings of the full buffet, but it’s such a good deal! They also have daily changing deals and happy hour prices. Servers were on top of it! Came by just enough times and kept the food coming!

We went to this restaurant for lunch AYCE. Service was great from Jordan. The meats were just ok though and limited meat options. They were not top quality and too chewy. Maybe dinner would be better with the more expensive options. Would not go back for lunch.

My parents and I visited this location on 11/26, and we shared the meat variety platter. Everything was delicious and well-marinated. The Harami hotpot and the yaki-shabu were our favorites! We’ve been coming here for 15 years, and this visit reminded us why we keep coming back. Big thanks to the whole Gyu-Kaku crew! Special thanks to our server, Henry—he made sure my parents and I felt very taken care of, and we really appreciated his recommendations and helping us get the best value for our needs. Only one small suggestion (not a big deal): our rice was brought toward the end of the meal, after we had already finished our meats. It would have been nice to have it served at the beginning but we understand the restaurant was busy.

The food in and of itself was delicious and the group experience was nice but this location had a few issues. My group chose the 45 item ea 90 minute all you can eat special. In the beginning it took about 15 minutes for two severs to figure out how to light one of our grills. Then there was the flow of food to the table. The first trip was fine (you are limited to how many item you can order at a single time) but for every order afterwards the portions got not only progressively smaller they also started taking longer and longer to get to the table. I could not help but begin ro feel as if this was intentionally. There was an item that I had to order three separate times before it finally came eating up a lot of the preset time alloted. I had a two year old with me and apparently the location had only a single highchair for the entire restaurant (a lot of booster seats though). Finally the restroom seemingly very old making it look dirty even though I do not think it actually was plus there was no baby changing station. From 0600 (6am) hours to 1800 (6pm) you have to find public parking wich is pretty difficult especially if you have a larger vehicle although after 1800 you are allowed to park on the street just outside the resturant door which is obviously much more convenient.

Came for a birthday dinner while on vacation. We went during happy hour so some appetizers and dishes were discounted. Food was yummy and served quickly! Dan our server was friendly and extremely accommodating! He honestly made our night! He was suggesting a bunch of places to check out in the area and made sure we have everything we needed at the table. I had to take out a star since I found the place filthy in some areas especially the restroom, hopefully they take immediate action to this problem.
