A Tradition of Island-Style Japanese Comfort

For decades, the dining room on South King Street has served as a cornerstone of the McCully-Moiliili community. Stepping into Gyotaku feels less like a formal affair and more like dropping into a bustling family kitchen. It is the kind of place where the air carries the savory scent of simmering dashi and the distinct, crisp aroma of freshly fried tempura.

The Art of the Teishoku

The menu is a sprawling roadmap of Japanese comfort food, but the true stars are the Teishoku sets. These comprehensive meals arrive as a rhythmic sequence of small plates, featuring everything from buttery broiled black cod to their signature chicken katsu. You will hear the lively clatter of ceramic bowls and the hum of locals debating their favorite sushi combinations. It is a no-frills, high-quality experience that prioritizes substance over pretension.

What to Expect When Visiting

This is a favorite among multi-generational families in Honolulu, making for a lively, occasionally noisy environment during weekend dinner hours. While the parking lot can be a tight squeeze during peak times, the trade-off is consistent, scratch-made cooking that has remained a staple in the neighborhood for generations. Whether you are craving a warm bowl of udon on a rainy afternoon or a variety-filled bento, the kitchen moves with a practiced efficiency that keeps the line—and the plates—moving.

Hubby and I took some guests here for dinner. We were disappointed with the service on this visit. Choon, our server was not attentive at all. First, we ordered appetizers and drinks. Then we ordered our entree a few minutes after. Our appetizers took a long while to arrive. One of the entree arrived before our appetizer and that’s when our server realized we haven’t gotten our appetizer yet. She brought the appetizer soon after which we figured it was just sitting in the kitchen ready to be served for a while. We had to waive our server down to order dessert and get our check. The young lady that served our water and tea was very attentive and helpful which we did not get her name. The night was busy but wasn’t crazy busy. The manager did come around to say hello. We usually like to take guests here because we’ve always had a wonderful experience. Overall it’s a nice place to take guests here for great Japanese food and spacious dining area.

I have been eating at Gyotaku for many years and they consistently provide amazing food, outstanding service, and a friendly & knowledgeable staff. I eat in for meetings and get take-out and/or delivery when with clients or hanging out with the family. We know we are always going to get delicious and high quality food. My recommendation is the butterfish. Always a favorite. Thanks for being awesome Gyotaku!💖

My ohana loves gyotaku. My go-to is the miso butterfish and my husband loves the katsu curry. I've tried the chicken teriyaki, miso salmon, all of them are great! We've tried a few sushi before too,and the dragon roll is our fave! Their shaved ice is good too! Always a happy tummy after dining here!

We came spontaneously during a weekday lunch and were surprised to see how busy this place was. However upon reading the menu it seemed that everything was around $30-$50 per dish which was really high for such a casual place. We managed to order some lunch specials and the portion came really small. What’s more, the food was really not up to par. The tonkatsu was clearly a reheat. The Tenpura was just so so. I could only enjoy the rice and salad/soup to be honest. When I came out to parking, there was more cars and some were parked directly behind us which almost made it impossible to back out. Many of the diners here are elderly so how do they expect them to back out safely???

Excellent service! They were able to accommodate our party of about 20 people. The food was fresh and delicious and we ordered some apps which were easily shareable. There is a 90min time limit so plan accordingly!

Excellent dinner experience. The ribeye was perfectly grilled with a great sear—juicy, flavorful, and simply done right. The sushi was fresh, well-balanced, and beautifully prepared with clean textures and solid portions. Service was attentive and the atmosphere relaxed and comfortable. Consistently good quality all around. Highly recommend.

Mr. Jones, We had a wonderful dinner with friends. We wanted to leave this review to highlight a glaring need to make a credit card surcharge more transparent. We were not aware of this charge until it appeared on our receipt. Upon calling the restaurant when we got home we were told it was posted upfront. When asked why the waitress did not inform us, we were told it took into effect 4 months ago. Mr. Jones, this whole experience could end in a more positive way if your waitstaff, when handing the guest the check, would simply inform your guests of this added credit card surcharge to give them the option to pay in alternate ways. We love your restaurant, like many, and have wonderful family memories here. I’m writing this so others can continue to feel this place is like family. Thank you for your kind consideration to this matter.

Today I got to try their chicken curry and it really was great. A salad with vinegar seasoned was also included. The service was very friendly and helpful.

Food is good but It's so expensive if you don't get lunch special or senior plate. So make sure you go before 2pm. I do love the kids eat free on Monday and Tuesdays. Our waiter was nice, but don't expect other workers to greet you happily when you walk in. After 2pm, 3 adult with tax and tip, $100

I was very impressed with Gyotaku. To start, the salad was a really delicious surprise with a much appreciated imitation crab piece. For the entree, the steak was perfectly seasoned, tender, and juicy. It came with tempura as a combo, which was a fantastic contrast for the meal. I'd definitely go back for their steak.
