Green Papaya
About
A Slice of Hanoi in Kaimuki
Walking into Green Papaya feels less like visiting a restaurant and more like dropping into a bustling family kitchen tucked away in the heart of Kaimuki. The air is thick with the scent of star anise, charred lemongrass, and the sharp, bright zing of fish sauce. It is a no-frills, counter-service spot that prioritizes the bowl over the decor.
What to Expect on Your Table
The menu is a masterclass in balance, particularly their signature green papaya salad. It provides that essential crunch—cold, shredded fruit tossed with vibrant herbs and a dressing that hits every note from salty to spicy. Their pho broth is clarified and clean, a result of long-simmering processes that respect traditional techniques. You will notice the steam rising from oversized bowls, reflecting light off the stainless steel surfaces. The portion sizes here are generous, making it a go-to spot for locals looking for a soul-warming lunch without the fuss.
The Local Pulse
Because the space is modest, it can get quite loud during the weekday lunch rush as the neighborhood office crowd files in. Finding a spot to park on the surrounding streets can sometimes be a test of patience, but the quick turnover of tables usually works in your favor. It is the perfect place for those who value authentic, unpretentious Vietnamese cooking over elaborate table service. Whether you are grabbing a quick banh mi to-go or settling in for a bowl of noodles on a rainy afternoon, the kitchen staff remains consistent, reliable, and swift.

We ordered the tofu curry from DoorDash. It was very quick and warm. It came with noodles instead of rice and only had tofu, potatoes, onion and carrots. I think my grandma expected more veggies since she’s vegetarian but as she was sick and this was fast it got the job done. Thanks

I only had the hot pot and thought it was ok. They have other options that are entrees my aunt raves about so I'll give it a try next time. The service adds another star, very sweet restaurant manager is a manifestation of the aloha spirit, that by itself is worth keeping this place alive.

Green Papaya is now on the corner of Young St. and Keeaumoku St. it’s now combined with Pot Pot Shabu Buffet under the same owner. So now you can get either the same old Green Papaya menu, which is excellent, or shabu shabu hot pot. The new space offers a lot more parking options than their old place and the restaurant space itself is larger and nicer. For the shabu shabu side, they have a ton of choices for meats and veggies in the refrigerators (see photos). And as for the Green Papaya, they still have the best spring rolls and Tom Yum on the island!
