A Slice of Mumbai in Honolulu

Tucked away from the typical beachside tourist traps, Gourmet Lani serves as a refreshing departure for those craving authentic Indian spices in the middle of Hawaii. The kitchen is known for its mastery of traditional clay oven cooking, filling the air with the unmistakable, charred aroma of freshly fired tandoori chicken.

What to Expect on Your Plate

The menu highlights regional classics that balance heat and comfort. Locals frequently flock here for the chicken tikka masala, which avoids the overly sweet trap of many westernized kitchens, opting instead for a complex, tomato-based gravy that demands a side of butter garlic naan. For those who appreciate vegetarian fare, the dal makhani offers a rich, buttery depth that comes from hours of slow simmering, a rare find in the Honolulu dining scene.

The Lay of the Land

Walking into the dining room feels modest and unpretentious. It is the kind of place where the focus remains entirely on the depth of the curry rather than fancy table settings. Be prepared for a bit of a localized adventure; the storefront layout is compact, and during the dinner rush, the noise levels can rise as conversations bounce off the walls, adding a lively, bustling energy to your meal. Parking in this part of town requires a bit of patience, so factor in a few extra minutes to navigate the nearby street spots before you sit down to dive into your meal.

I didn't know I liked Indian food until I started eating here. Now I crave it all the time! They give you generous amounts that leave you feeling full, and everything is so delicious, rich, and flavorful. The daal makhani is my absolute favorite and I highly recommend the chana masala and the chicken tikka masala. The mango lassi is a must-have, along with the garlic cheese naan. I also highly recommend going for lunch, as they serve generous portions for a really good price. Lunches even come with different kinds of sides to try. Love it here!

I ordered the yellow dal soup for takeout last night. I have previously ordered this and it was hearty filled with lots of lentils and delicious. Being excited about the quality last time, I ordered again and received a soup that was basically just broth. If you’re going to serve a hearty soup that’s fine or if you’re just going to serve a broth soup that’s ok too but the inconsistency from having a soup full of chunky goodness to almost nothing is pretty disappointing to me. The picture shows what I received in my soup after i poured out all the liquid…..next time I’m ordering broth only I just want to know I’m ordering broth only so I have a choice or I want the same quality of product I ordered previously.

If there was an option for 4.5* I would’ve given this place. Great variety of food, good taste. Me and wife tried the kadai paneer and dal fry and both of them tasted amazing. The reason I am not giving it a 5 star rating is because the space was a bit too tight for 2 people, restaurant itself is pretty average not super amazing and the portion sizes seemed a bit small. Apart from that really nice place with good food. Highly recommend.

Everything was mid. The interior and the food. Nothing tasted horrible, but nothing stood out either. We ordered some non veg Thalia’s, Maharashi chicken, red chicken boti, malai bit, and lamb botis. The meat quality wasn’t the best—the lamb was chewy and gamey, and chicken tasted rubbery. But the seasonings and marinades were good. It would’ve been really good had the meat quality been better. Naan was good and fresh. Overall, it fulfilled the desi food craving for my in-laws but they didn’t really care for the food. And I had similar thoughts. The server was busy but doing her best. Nice people, just wish the food was better.

Kamana Kitchen in Honolulu was excellent! The food was really tasty and the portions were generous. Service was super fast, and the team was quick and attentive with responses. Everything came out fresh and flavorful. Definitely a great spot if you’re looking for delicious food and efficient service. Highly recommend!
