A Slice of Chennai in the Pacific

Finding authentic South Indian street food amidst the high-rises of Honolulu can be a challenge, but Ganesh Dosa brings a genuine, no-frills experience to the local dining scene. This is a spot for those who value flavor over fanfare. The air inside is often thick with the heady, roasted aroma of cumin, mustard seeds, and sizzling butter, signaling that a fresh batch of batter is hitting the griddle.

The Dosa Experience

The menu centers entirely around the art of the dosa. These paper-thin, fermented rice and lentil crepes arrive at your table shattered-glass crisp on the edges and soft in the center. The Masala Dosa is the undisputed anchor here, stuffed with a spiced potato mash that carries a slow, creeping heat. Each order is accompanied by a trio of chutneys—the cooling coconut being a necessary contrast to the sharp, tangy sambar.

You will notice the kitchen operates with a frantic, rhythmic efficiency. It is loud, the clatter of stainless steel plates is constant, and seating is communal enough that you might find yourself shoulder-to-shoulder with a local office worker grabbing a quick lunch. It isn't a place for a long, lingering candlelit dinner; it is a place for satisfying a craving for something salty, spicy, and deeply comforting.

Practical Details for Diners

Expect a humble, utilitarian interior that focuses all its energy on the food quality. Parking in this part of Honolulu requires some patience, so build in extra time if you are driving. For those seeking a meat-free meal that doesn't sacrifice intensity or portion size, the selection here is arguably the most reliable in the city. Come early, grab a paper cup of warm chai, and prepare for a meal that prioritizes traditional technique over modern presentation.

Small, no frills restaurant serving *delicious* savory and sweet dosas, along with Sambar (lentil soup), Mango lassi, and other treats (see photo of menu). Dosas are a traditional food from south India and are similar to a crepe, but made from a fermented batter of rice and lentils. Here the dosas are quickly cooked to order on large griddles and stuffed with your choice of a traditional spicy potato filling or other more familiar options. All of the dishes are vegetarian or vegan and made from organic ingredients, and all of the dishes are gluten-free (safe for Celiac). Limited seating inside and outside (two picnic tables with umbrellas). This place is our "go to" when visiting Kailua and Lanikai Beach.

A dosa place in east oahu was not on my 2026 list. Pablo was a warm, nice owner. He suggested the right things. The food was really good. The dosa batter tasted like home made dosa batter. Potato masala was really good. What took me by surprise was the sambar. It was homely and tasted great. Coffee, chai and chutneys weren’t up to the mark though. One suggestion for Pablo - the chutneys would get a super big upgrade if you add tadka to it. Procedure - just sauté mustard seeds, curry leaves, red chilli in peanut or coconut oil , wait for it to pop and then put it the chutney before packing. I also highly recommend the Nutella dosa! So glad I got that I highly recommend this restaurant when in oahu and going east.

The food was delicious with a few fusion flavors like a Mediterranean with olives and feta cheese, another with cheese, avocado. The usual flavors with potatoes filling and with chutney powder is available as well and delicious. Soft and spongey idlis. The sambhar soup was good and served hot. Chutneys were alright . The Madras coffee was a downer though. The staff was super friendly, attentive and considerate.
