A Slice of Honolulu Culinary History

Stepping into Fukuya feels like a time capsule of local Honolulu heritage. This long-standing establishment is a rare survivor of the traditional Japanese okazu-ya style—a humble, counter-service shop where glass cases are packed with prepared dishes meant to be mixed and matched. Located just a short drive from the bustling streets of Moiliili, it serves as a community anchor for those seeking authentic, no-frills comfort food.

The Art of the Okazu-ya Selection

The experience here is tactile and personal. You walk along the display cases, pointing to various items as a staff member packs your tray. The aroma is quintessential home-cooking: the sweet, savory scent of shoyu-braised meats, the slight tang of pickled vegetables, and the comforting warmth of freshly steamed white rice. Their nori-wrapped musubi and signature mochiko chicken are essential pickups, often selling out early in the morning.

Navigating the Local Favorite

Fukuya isn't a place for lingering over wine lists or candlelight; it is a fast-paced, high-utility spot where efficiency is the name of the game. Be prepared for a bit of a dance in the parking lot, as spaces are tight and the midday rush draws a steady stream of regulars. If you are looking for a true taste of local lifestyle, grab a bento box to-go and head toward the nearby Ala Wai for an impromptu picnic. This is honest, hardworking food that represents the flavor profile of generations of Honolulu families.

They say to go early. I went at 730 am. There was a line. About 6 people a head of me. The service is quick. I decided to make things quicker by ordering the set take out combs. I got the C combo. Substitute the chicken for the mori chicken 75 cents more. And dessert, almond cookies and chocolate chips cookies. Everything was delicious. It was like time traveling to the 60's. Cone sushi like back in the day. I never had the chicken nori. Its fried chicken with a secret sauce. To die for! Chow Fun is so good. Cookies. Almond cookies, better than original, lol. Ambiance, clean!

Today I got to try some of their food, chow fun & croquette & tofu burger & fried/mochiko chix & special vegetable and "WOW" they were good. Each one had their own great taste. Moreover, the workers were nice and very efficient while so many people and drive thru orders were being processed. This place is a gem.

Fukuya's is a tradition for our family and things are as good as I remember them from childhood. It takes a special family to keep us well fed for more than 3 decades. My favorites are the hash patties, fried ahi (belly), fried tofu, gobo, and shiso musubi. Everything is great except parking. There are so many regulars and new comers alike because you get that family feel and comfort of grandma's okazuya. This is what I measure all other okazuya to. Even the other popular ones. My husband grew up with the one in Waimalu or even kalihi and he converted to being addicted to Fukuyas too.

There’s not too many Okazuya spots left in Hawaii. I was so great-full to hear that Fukuya was still open. This established has been around for many, many years and the quality has never changed ♥️. Staff is super friendly & food is always at its greatest quality. You get to choose from many different options. I highly recommend this spot. Only downfall Parking lot is a bit small and it’s a bit hard to find if you’re not paying attention.

I have been coming to this okazuya since little keiki times, and it's still the best. Musubi, Chow fun, mochiko chicken, mochi, hotdog maki, teri ahi, hash, tsukemono, and more, all the good comfort foods. Parking is limited, but opens up fairly quickly.

Very expensive, but good selection. It's easy to get carried away, but brace yourself when they give you the total. 2 plates and a side order of hot dog sushi came out to $40!!! The parking is extremely limited, and I often have to pass because there isn't any parking

This is a somewhat busy okazuya with lots to choose from. Staff is very friendly. Prices are a bit steep for what its worth. Food was okay. Their mochi is probably the only thing I really liked from here.

Food is grinds! Tofu salad is the best! Love the variety of musubis. Hard to not order one of everything. Is it cheap? No, but it's hand made old school okazu!
