A Neighborhood Staple for Fresh Poke

Stepping into Fresh Catch on Kapahulu Avenue feels less like visiting a restaurant and more like dropping by a local friend’s house for a neighborhood cookout. The air is thick with the scent of shoyu, ginger, and the briny, clean smell of freshly harvested Ahi. Whether you are coming straight from a morning surf at Waikiki or driving down from Kaimuki, this is where Honolulu locals line up for their daily fix of island-style comfort food.

Poke Beyond the Basics

Chef Reno Henriques redefined the local lunch plate game by elevating poke from a grocery store snack to a centerpiece. The display case here is a vibrant rainbow of cubed fish, ranging from the classic Ahi Limu—where the crunch of seaweed meets buttery tuna—to the adventurous spicy kimchi and garlic-laden varieties. If you find yourself staring at the glass for ten minutes trying to decide, you aren't alone; the selection is notoriously overwhelming in the best way possible.

The Plate Lunch Experience

Beyond the raw fish, the kitchen pushes out heavy-hitting plate lunches that define the Honolulu food scene. Expect generous scoops of creamy mac salad and sticky white rice alongside items like the Furikake-crusted salmon or their famous smoke meat. The dining area is modest and bustling with the sound of plastic forks clattering against styrofoam and lively banter. Be prepared for a challenge finding parking in the tight lot, especially during the lunch rush, but the taste of authentic Hawaiian soul food makes the maneuver worth the effort. It is unpretentious, loud, and undeniably the heartbeat of the Kapahulu culinary corridor.

Awesome little spot about 20 minute drive from Waikiki Beach. Great for take out. There are 2 benches inside if you want to eat there; That is what we did! Garlic Salmon was really delicious, and the Spicy Ahi Katsu was fantastic. Great choices. Limited parking outside. Recommended spot!

The cashier was not friendly at all & to make matters worse she only provided 1 napkin with our order of two plates. I asked for more napkins and she gave me 1 more, I then apologized while asking for more & even explained that I have a toddler & we’re going to be eating at a park. Well she didn’t care & proceeded to provide me 1 more napkin all while giving me attitude with her body language. It wasn’t nice nor necessary as I did use manners while requesting more napkins. It’s upsetting to have this experience as a paying customer who ordered two menu items, am I not entitled to more napkins at my request? Two napkins at the minimum should she be given per menu item ordered. Also want to add the cashier did not thank me or welcome me back as she gave me my order. I’m honestly just shocked by my experience today.

🔅We have gone to both brick and mortar locations (Honolulu and Kaneohe) since we are find that quality of their pokes to EXCEED any other poke on the island (yes this includes Foodland 🫣). 🔅Their pokes have NO fishy smell, great texture (almost melts in your mouth), and well thought out flavors. You order the poke by weight. I recommend getting 1/4 - 1/2 lb to start. This place is a local gem that we will continue to support 🩵 🔅Must Tries: • Poke bowl w/ * Ahi Shoyu (umami and sweet) * Hawaiian Blend (sweet and salty) * Spicy Shoyu * Wasabi Shoyu * Firecracker Ahi * Salmon Poke * Old School Ahi (simple) • Ahi Katsu plate 🔅We have tried a ✨variety✨ of their pokes since it’s always something new when we return back to Oahu. The workers are always kind and welcoming every time we visit. Especially the older granny - very humble and happy. All the must tries are hits and you will not be disappointed. WE LOVE FRESH CATCH. 🔅Honolulu location — * Few dedicated parking spot * Be mindful there might not be an open spot of park — may have to wait OR find street parking * No dine-in — we go to this location often since we can take our food to to our place to devour their food in private Disclaimer: This review has been posted twice for both locations w/ slight differences since it’s quality of food and service are the exact same — 5 out of 5 ⭐️

My favorite fish box during my trip to the island. The fish tastes very fresh and the sauce has so many layers of taste!the portions of the food are large and price is very affordable. The dining experience is great too very clean and nice people working there! I will definitely go back next time.

This spot is within a walking distance from Leonard’s. They only offer 15 min takeout parking spots. There is a bench to sit indoors if you want to eat there. We ordered the spicy hawaiian and spicy salmon. The fish tasted fresh and succulent. Spicy salmon tasted sweet like eating mango with chili. The sauce on spicy hawaiian was creamy and tasty, albeit a little too salty to my taste. They have a lot of options so it may take a while to decide. A decent poke spot in my view.

This fish market is truly one of those rare gems that you can’t help but rave about. They serve some of the freshest, highest-quality dishes you’ll find anywhere, and you can taste it in every bite. The ahi katsu is the standout — perfectly crispy on the outside with that golden crunch, and unbelievably tender on the inside. It literally melts in your mouth. It’s one of those dishes that makes you stop mid-bite because you can’t believe how good it is. Portions are very generous, too. You easily end up with leftovers, and somehow it tastes just as good later. That’s how you know the quality is real. The vibe inside is exactly what you want from a true fresh market — nothing fake or commercial. You see the fish, smell the freshness, and feel that authentic local energy. It’s not trying too hard, it’s just good. Real. Honest. And delicious. One of my favorite parts is the auntys who work there. They always show love, always greet you with warmth, and make you feel like family from the moment you walk in. That kind of hospitality is rare, and it makes every visit feel special. If there’s any downside, it’s only that they close early, so you have to plan your day around it — but honestly, it’s worth adjusting your schedule. When something is this fresh and this good, you make the time. Overall, this is absolutely a must-try spot for anyone who loves quality seafood, generous portions, and genuine aloha-style service. I’ll keep coming back again and again.

Fresh Catch is a fantastic spot for fresh fish & poke dishes. A deli style counter inside with simple menu items & pictures makes even a first time customer feel comfortable. The waiting area is just that, a place to sit and wait, though the service is fast and friendly. By the time you casually look at the all pictures, you’re order will be coming along & be careful of the heat on the bottom of to-go trays, I almost burnt myself, but that’s okay because it’s fresh! Good portion & priced accordingly…recommend 🤙🏼🎣
