A Slice of Aiea Heritage in the Heart of Waikiki

Forty Niner brings the legendary, no-frills comfort food of its original Aiea roots directly to Honolulu's vibrant visitor district. While the brand is famously associated with the humble, old-school diner experience, this location serves as a welcoming hub for those looking to bypass the polished tourist traps in favor of local soul food.

Savoring Local Favorites

The menu remains a reliable rotation of island-style classics. The Oxtail Soup is the undisputed star here—a fragrant, star-anise infused broth that arrives steaming hot, loaded with tender meat, peanuts, and fresh cilantro. It is the kind of dish that demands a side of rice and a bit of patience while you navigate the bones. The Loco Moco, featuring a house-made patty and rich, savory gravy, offers a quintessential taste of Hawaiian breakfast culture that holds its own against any upscale brunch spot in Waikiki.

The Diner Atmosphere

Stepping inside, the space trades high-concept decor for functional comfort. It feels like an extension of a neighborhood kitchen, buzzing with the clatter of plates and the murmur of patrons. It is a fantastic spot for a casual breakfast or a restorative lunch after a morning at the beach. Be mindful that during peak weekend hours, the space can get quite lively, and you might find yourself shoulder-to-shoulder with locals and travelers alike. Parking in this area of Honolulu can be a bit of a puzzle, so plan accordingly to avoid the stress of tight spots.

Whether you are searching for a hearty start to your day or a dependable, flavor-forward meal that feels honest and unpretentious, this spot captures the spirit of Hawaiian hospitality without the added fluff.

We were staying close by and read reviews of the Loco Moco at Forty Niner. I really wanted to try this and we walked the few blocks to the location inside the Island Colony hotel. My wife and I both ordered the Loco Moco and had a seat waiting in the eating area. The food came out fairly quickly and it was very good. The egg was cooked perfectly, so the yolk runs down in the juicy pork and rice. The gravy added a nice flavor to the bite as I ate the whole plate. It was a great experience for my first Loco Moco.

this place was absolutely goated during our stay at the island colony. the pancakes are superb, come steaming hot right off the griddle, and were impeccable. we ordered the ube pancakes the first day. i was surprised to see that the pancakes were not ube themselves, but were classic pancakes with ube sauce smothered on the top. this proved not to be an issue as the sauce was very concentrated in ube flavor, was thick, and divine. my only worry was that the syrup wasn't going to be enough for the second pancake underneath the first, but there was just enough sauce to eat with the second pancake. i felt a little worried that extra sauce costs an additional cost, but thankfully we didn't need to use it. the second pancake was also on the burnt, side, which thankfully didn't ruin the meal itself due to the strength of the sauce, but it was noticeable! the next day i ordered the haupia with banana and it was my partner's favorite. the pancakes were cooked to perfection this time, and were steaming when we opened the box. the flavors were delicate, yet made themselves known, and came together in a not-too-sweet, rich and divine medley. everything about this pancake was amazing! because we were staying upstairs, enjoying the hotcakes straight was an absolute privilege. i would definitely come back for some fresh hotcakes again.

A true taste of old Hawaiʻi! Established in 1947, this classic café serves nostalgic island comfort food. We shared the Forty Niner Loco Moco—hearty, flavorful, and exactly what you’d hope for from a local favorite cafe!
