Fort Street Cafe
About
A Downtown Honolulu Lunchtime Sanctuary
If you find yourself navigating the bustling corridors of the Financial District in downtown Honolulu, you likely know that finding a quick, reliable lunch spot is an art form. Fort Street Cafe has long served as a go-to for professionals working in the surrounding high-rises who need a substantial meal without the formality of a sit-down bistro.
Local Flavors at a Brisk Pace
The kitchen here specializes in the kind of comfort food that defines island lunch culture. You will consistently find lines snaking toward the counter during the peak 12:00 PM rush, filled with a mix of office workers and locals craving their signature garlic chicken. The scent of sautéed aromatics often hits you before you even cross the threshold. The menu is a straightforward, no-nonsense list of local favorites, featuring generous scoops of mac salad and perfectly steamed rice that pair with their savory protein options.
Navigating the Lunch Rush
The interior is utilitarian and compact—do not expect white-tablecloth service here. It is an authentic, fast-paced experience where the sound of the metal flat-top grill serves as the constant soundtrack to your meal. Because seating is limited, many regulars opt to take their trays to the nearby public benches under the trees on the Fort Street Mall pedestrian walkway. It is a tight, crowded space during the midday peak, so be prepared to share a table or make a quick exit with your take-out box. While the neighborhood parking can be a challenge, the quick turnover makes it a viable stop for those in the downtown core looking for a hearty, authentic Hawaiian lunch plate.

This place is the best! Garlic chicken and curry is amazing and we always get the pho or bao buns. The same family has been serving here for years and we always visit when we are in Honolulu.

I heard that this place has a great garlic chicken, so I wanted to try! Yes, they have real garlic chicken! Crispy outside and juicy inside, and you can taste garlic. Not a hint of garlic! They put the garlic chicken over jasmine rice. The garlic sauce unites with rice. You can enjoy all items on a plate. If you like garlic, this is your place!! We also ordered Pad Thai with chicken. The noodle was thin. I was expected some sturdy noodles and peanut flavor… The taste was good, but the noodle texture was a bit weak. This place takes credit card, it is a good plus!!
