Garlic Butter Bliss on the Honolulu Strip

Hidden away from the polished resort dining rooms, Five Star Shrimp brings the raw, rugged spirit of Oahu's North Shore food trucks directly into the heart of Honolulu. There is no white-tablecloth pretense here; it is strictly about the sensory experience of peeling succulent, butter-drenched crustaceans while seated at an outdoor picnic table.

The Signature Garlic Punch

The star of the show is undeniably the Garlic Shrimp plate. The kitchen masterfully tosses jumbo, shell-on shrimp in a heavy, golden-brown garlic butter sauce that permeates the air around the ordering window. You’ll hear the aggressive sizzle of the flat-top grill before you even reach the counter, followed by the sweet, savory scent of caramelized garlic and sea salt. It is served alongside a generous scoop of white rice and a fresh side salad, providing a necessary, crisp contrast to the decadent oils of the main dish.

A Practical Local Haunt

This is a destination for those who prioritize flavor over formality. It is ideal for a quick, messy lunch after a morning at the beach or a casual evening bite with friends who appreciate a hearty meal. Be prepared for a bit of a localized quirk—the limited seating fills up quickly during the lunch rush, and you will likely find yourself standing as you navigate the messy, glorious work of devouring the shrimp. It is authentic, unapologetic, and delivers exactly what the Honolulu street food scene is famous for: bold seasoning and fresh, local ingredients handled with minimal fuss.

One of the best meals I had in Waikiki! I ordered the Mahi Mahi sautéed with rice and home potatoes - the fish was incredibly fresh, tender, and full of flavor. The home potatoes were a pleasant surprise and honestly stole the show for me. Be prepared for a wait though; the line can run 40–45 minutes on a busy evening. But the moment that plate lands on your table, it all feels completely worth it.

This was our last meal of the trip. Lineup was long, about 40 minutes. Was somewhat worth it; food was great! Had the ahi tuna meal in blackened style, with fish tacos, and a kids meal for the missus as she wanted to try the fish and chips. Cocktails are strong, they’re generous on the booze! Love it! Good vibes, friendly staff, good food! We’ll be back here in a few years on our next trip to Hawaii!

We decided to try this place because there’s a line outside ( good eats ) but it’s a little misleading .. you stand outside to get into the building line because there’s a maximum amount of people but it’s go to the window, order your food self serve your drink self your to go boxes.. Kind of felt like McDonald’s where you get a number and they bring your food out to the table after you order at the counter. A basic place for fast food seafood for less than an arm and a leg like most places near the beach. The “Seafood Pasta” had a few pieces of shrimp and more chicken than seafood in a sauce that kind of reminded us of the “sandy Beach “ a little gritty but edible with linguine. The Hamburger was as expected from a quick eat joint, frozen Sam’s Club patty with their signature salad chunks, and tomatoes with fresh shredded cheese mix on a brioche’ bun I think. But think of kraft shredded cheese that you put on a salad that melted on your burger. Sashimi was good didn’t really give me an option, but it was tuna and appeared fresh. There’s mixed reviews on the mahi-mahi plate. The fish itself is a little dry and had some flavor, but not one of our favorites. The potatoes were grilled nicely. The rice had good flavor and had their signature salad chunks on the plate. Onion rings were expected not overcooked and OK Fish and chips is what it is as a codfish deep-fried with french fries and their signature chunk salad nothing fancy. For a quick and cheap eats, you can’t go wrong here but it’s not a capital Grille or a fancy restaurant, as you might expect here in Waikiki but a great place to bring the kids for sure and you’ll save some money.
