Elevated Local Flavors in the Heart of Honolulu

Stepping into FEAST by Jon Matsubara feels like a masterclass in modern Hawaiian comfort food. Chef Jon Matsubara, a local culinary force, translates his deep-rooted island upbringing into dishes that prioritize the freshness of our Pacific catch. The kitchen excels at balancing traditional techniques with an inventive spirit, turning simple ingredients into something unexpected.

The Flavor Profile of Kaimuki and Beyond

You’ll find the menu moves through bright, acidic notes and rich, savory profiles that define the local palate. The garlic furikake fries and the house-made specialties draw a steady crowd from the surrounding Kaimuki neighborhood. It is the kind of spot where the smell of sizzling aromatics hits you the moment you cross the threshold, and the open-concept layout means you can hear the focused clatter of pans from almost every table.

What to Expect During Your Visit

This is not a white-tablecloth affair; it is a bustling, high-energy environment built for those who appreciate culinary precision without the pretense. If you are planning a visit, be mindful that the intimate space can get quite loud during peak dinner hours—it's a lively atmosphere that reflects the passion of the kitchen team. Parking in this busy corridor of Honolulu can be a bit of a puzzle, so arrive with a little extra time to scout a spot nearby. Whether you are grabbing a quick, elevated bite or settling in for a full meal, FEAST proves that local ingredients, when handled by a chef with Matsubara’s background, deliver a memorable sensory experience for any visitor exploring the local dining scene.

I have never been more frustrated with a dining experience. I live Mānoa and have been wanting to try this place for a very long time but heard mixed reviews about it. The overall atmosphere of the restaurant is what upset me the most. The store is one of the cutest buildings I have ever seen with adorable decor and an amazing view of Mānoa valley through their large glass doors. There is even a small patio outside that is absolutely perfect for a few drinks at sunset. My problem is that it is not set up as a restaurant at all. It is staged more like a takeout window with some seating available. Most of the space is used for storage and kitchen equipment. There are windows that are perfectly set up for service but instead a cashier is placed in the middle of the floor and the counters are covered in boxes of unknown items. As for the food, I ordered a lobster roll and it was absolutely delicious, coming from a New Englander I do not say this lightly. I was served my food in a takeout box even though I requested to dine in. I believe this is the only way you are served. As far as their hours go I was also disappointed. I arrived at 6:30 on a Friday night. They informed me when I arrived that they would be closing in 30 minutes. I looked into their hours online and found out that Friday nights were the only time they were open past 2. The only other times they are open is 11-2 Thursday-Saturday. This is another reason it took me so long to try Feast. All in all, I feel this restaurant could be so great. They have the cutest spot and great food. However, the strange service setup, disorganized layout, and minimal hours make it difficult for me to fully enjoy this restaurant. I hope to see some improvements in the future and will try to return when I can.

The Aloha Friday special for the prime rib loco moco at midtown eat location was not entirely satisfactory. In fact, it was the least enjoyable prime rib loco moco I have experienced. The meat was shredded and had a very salty taste. I would advise against selecting this special, particularly if you do not prefer extra salty, shredded meat. However, I can highly recommend their lobster rolls, which I consider to be the finest on the island.

Ordered the lobster roll for the first time....tasted good. Soft roll and lots of lobster in it. Came with French fries...which were crispy, which was a good thing. Gotta try the bento next time I come in. If your in Manoa, come check em out.
