Fat Cheeks
About
A Bold Take on Hawaii Comfort Food
In the heart of Honolulu, Fat Cheeks has carved out a reputation for being the go-to spot for unpretentious, flavor-forward plates that hit the spot after a long day in the sun. Stepping inside, you are immediately met with the sizzle of the flat top and the savory aroma of braised proteins. It is not a place for white-tablecloth pretense; it is a loud, bustling environment where the priority is strictly the food on your tray.
Signature Bites and Island Soul
The menu leans heavily into comfort, with their signature braised beef cheek serving as the crown jewel of the kitchen. Slow-cooked until it yields to the slightest pressure of a fork, the meat is rich, tender, and seasoned with a depth that suggests hours of careful attention. Pair that with their house-made sides, which carry just enough of that local kick to wake up your palate. Whether you are a local worker grabbing a quick lunch or a visitor eager to taste what Honolulu residents actually eat when they want something hearty, this is the destination.
The Experience
Expect a compact dining space where conversation flows easily over the sounds of the kitchen. While the tight seating arrangement means you might brush shoulders with your neighbor, it adds to the communal, grassroots feel of the eatery. Pro tip: plan your arrival carefully if you are driving, as street parking in this part of town can be a bit of a scavenger hunt during peak lunch hours. Despite the potential for a short wait, the reward is a meal that feels honest, substantial, and crafted by people who clearly love what they do.

If you're cruising through paradise and craving something unforgettable, Fat Cheeks Hawaii is the move. Their lobster roll was Absolute next level. Overflowing with sweet, buttery lobster and served on a perfectly toasted roll. It was rich, fresh, and tastes like it was made with aloha and a little culinary magic.

Ordered the fried chicken sandwich with fries. The hype is real - at least for what I ordered. Amazing crisp on the chicken and the meat is still juicy. The fries were seasoned so well. Go ahead and get yourself a ranch dip sauce there because it is thick, it’s amazing, and well worth the extra fee.

Very casual place, order from one counter pick up from the other and find a seat either in the hallway or outdoors. The air conditioner was blasting too cold for us inside, so we ate outside, which was perfect on a breezy Hawaiian day. Had the 3.5 ounce lobster roll which came with a roll that’s oh-so sweet, lobster meat, and butter. They are generous with the butter which adds to the deliciousness of the roll. The bread tastes like it was made fresh. It is crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and soaking up all the goodness of the lobster and butter. French fries were well cooked and crispy and didn’t need any seasoning. This is the best lobster roll I’ve ever had! I’ll be back!

Updated as of 1/2026: we brought our visiting family members here for a quick lobster meal. The jumbo lobster roll was a hit as were the shrimp burgers. Surprisingly, the smash burger I had was pretty good. The prices were reasonable and there’s a resident’s discount on Wednesdays. Original Review: Hidden inside one of the older buildings of Ward Village that will soon be demolished for more luxury condominiums. There were a few tables outside and as well as indoor next to this eatery. The lobster rolls were quite good and sufficiently big, the grilled shrimp sandwich was excellent. The fries were tasty and crispy, but a bit on the oily side.

Stopped here for lunch, we ordered the buttered lobster roll, the lobster BLT, and a side of fries. Very friendly service and the food didn't take long at all. They have a small outdoor seating area, and a few tables inside. The area is okay, it's in a mall so about what you'd expect. Despite that, the food was excellent, very well cooked lobster and the portion sizes were great for the price. Definitely recommend a stop here!

Stopped by to give it a try for lunch - bonus it was Kama'aina Wednesday - so 10% off! Ordering was a little slow and it then took 15 minutes to get two lobster rolls and an order of fries, but worth it in the end. Rolls were fresh with a generous portion of lobster each and, even though coated, which I don’t normally like, the fries were crisp and hot. The truffle mayo was also worth the couple bucks they charged. A couple tables inside where you order plus at least half a dozen outside, but in the shade, so great place to enjoy the food. All in all, not cheap but worth the price if you need your lobster fix here on the island!

We saw the ratings, we came to check it out. It’s been awhile since I’ve been to Ward Center. One of my pet peeves is parking there especially with the number of oversized vehicles. Anyway, Fat Cheeks is at one end of Ward Center. Seating options: freezing indoor tables (set up sidewalk style) or outdoor tables (ditto, sidewalk style, meaning pigeons are hanging out). We got the classic recommendation of the lobster roll and I tried the fish+chips. So in order of reactions: 1-fresh out of the pan/fryer food (meaning served piping hot); 2-so spicy and salty; 3-the butter on the lobster or grease from the fries last for a few hours; 4-the lobster and fish all felt very soft, maybe too tender? We were literally not so hungry for dinner after having lunch here. It’s great to go and experience it. However I don’t think I’ll be coming back because its probably not to great for my heart health. Serving team was cheerful and worked well together. So shout out to them for making memorable food together!

Finally! A great, perfectly made lobster roll. We have been on the hunt for the best lobster roll and we’ve found it. Great customer service from the lady up front. The original lobster roll wasn’t ‘doctored’ with extra ingredients to mask or ‘add extra’ to the lobster. Just used simple ingredients on perfectly seasoned big chunks of lobster on buttered bread. We also tried the truffle oil with bacon lobster roll, but that had a lot of things going on. You get a drink OR chips with the roll. There were other options, for those not going for a lobster roll. Prices were great, too. Definitely will be back!
