Ethel's Grill
About
A Kalihi Culinary Institution
Ethel's Grill stands as a cornerstone of the Kalihi district, offering a no-frills, authentic glimpse into the working-class soul of Honolulu. This family-run spot is famous for its distinct blend of Japanese-influenced local cuisine, serving plates that feel like a home-cooked meal prepared by a grandmother who knows exactly what you need after a long shift.
Signature Flavors
The menu is anchored by the legendary seared Ahi tataki, which arrives with a sharp, garlicky ponzu sauce that clears the sinuses and wakes up the palate. Don't overlook the moco loco, a localized staple featuring a perfectly fried egg resting atop a succulent patty, or their daily specials which frequently sell out before the lunch rush subsides. You will hear the rhythmic clatter of spatulas against flat-top grills and the low hum of local chatter, creating an atmosphere that prioritizes nourishment over pretense.
The Kalihi Experience
This is not a place for white-tablecloth service; the space is compact, utilitarian, and often buzzing with energy. Parking in the surrounding industrial pockets can be a bit of a challenge, so come prepared to circle the block or walk a short distance through the neighborhood. It is the perfect stop for those who value substance over spectacle, catering to locals, construction crews, and food enthusiasts seeking the real, unvarnished tastes of Oahu. Expect a seat-yourself environment and a menu board that rewards those who arrive early enough to claim the freshest ingredients.

Take-out only and sooooo worth every morsel. All four dishes we tried were very tasty, even the deep fried turkey tail which was very rich, and were totally wiped clean. Particularly loved the bitter melon pork and egg stir fry which is such a nostalgic comfort food for me, and the Ahi Tataki sashimi plate which was super fresh! Always appreciate an ample amount of greens and every sauce they provided was very well paired for the dish, whether gingery sweet citrus or garlicky soy sauce. The miso was also very flavorful :) definitely want to come back and try more!

I hate the No Parking situation at Ethel’s Grill but love the food. The Jumbo Chicken Katsu Donburi Special with miso soup and salad was a lot of food. So sad to hear that they are closing and hope that they will relocate somewhere soon. One of my favorite stops in Kalihi whenever I visit.

This place is a hidden 💎 Everything here is delicious, portions are large and priced well they all include a seafood miso soup that is very tasty 🤤 Parking can be tricky, normally I find parking in the side of the building in the parking structure. The street is never busy also the order is brought out when it’s ready. This place only offers takeout, but sand island is just down the street and makes a perfect ocean front dine.
