Epi-Ya Boulangerie Patisserie & Patisserie
About
A Slice of Tokyo in the Heart of Honolulu
Stepping into Epi-Ya on Isenberg Street feels less like a quick bakery run and more like a quiet morning in a suburban neighborhood of Tokyo. The scent of caramelized crusts and buttery brioche hits you the moment the door swings open, competing with the faint, rhythmic sound of the ovens in the back.
The Art of the Japanese Soft Roll
This isn't your typical French patisserie. Epi-Ya specializes in the delicate, fluffy textures characteristic of Japanese baking. The signature Hokkaido-style milk breads are pillowy soft, often sold in thick, bouncy slices that pull apart with ease. Their curry pan—a savory, deep-fried dough stuffed with aromatic, mildly spiced Japanese curry—is a local favorite for those seeking a quick, warming bite while navigating the busy thoroughfares near Ala Moana.
Why Locals Keep Coming Back
The space is functional and minimalist, designed for efficiency rather than lingering. You might notice the queue spilling onto the sidewalk during peak morning hours, as regulars scramble to snag the last of the melon pan before they vanish from the trays. It is a no-frills, high-quality operation; the staff moves with precision, and the focus remains entirely on the consistency of the dough. While parking in this pocket of Honolulu can be a bit of a localized puzzle, the reward of a fresh, warm pastry makes it a trivial sacrifice. Whether you are grabbing a quick breakfast before heading to work or picking up a variety of sweet buns for an office meeting, Epi-Ya brings a distinct, refined craftsmanship to the island's bread scene.

Delicious, fresh, quality ingredients, good selection and friendly service. I love the pastries baked here, tastes like they were made especially for you and not mass produced. I personally like this Japanese bakery better than brug. Don't forget to try the freshly baked bread! You can get the bread sliced to the thickness you want. Different breads are baked and ready at certain times. There's usually a line but it goes by fast. Parking is limited but also opens up quickly.

Their croissants are better than Parisian croissants. The ham roll is to die for. In the atmosphere is amazing. Service is great but pro tip, ask them to heat up something you want warm, they can do it for you. I was in Hawaii four times over 5 years and every time I go to Hawaii I always get food from this bakery. It is a must stop.
