A Modern Take on Waikiki Dining

Stepping into Doraku Sushi feels like a departure from the typical tourist-heavy circuits of Waikiki. Located right in the heart of Honolulu’s Royal Hawaiian Center, this izakaya-style spot trades the stuffy, traditional sushi bar aesthetic for a pulsing, energetic lounge atmosphere. Dark wood accents and dim, moody lighting make it a prime candidate for a late-night date or a high-energy group dinner before heading out into the city night.

Signature Flavors and Izakaya Spirit

Chef Kevin Aoki brings a distinct approach to the menu, focusing on inventive rolls and Japanese tapas meant to be shared. The signature garlic edamame is a non-negotiable starter, arriving with a heavy, fragrant punch of garlic that sets the tone for the rest of the meal. You will notice the kitchen leans heavily into bold, umami-forward flavors rather than just delicate fish profiles. Their selection of sakes is impressively curated, and the staff is remarkably adept at suggesting pairings that cut through the richness of the seared salmon or the yellowtail carpaccio.

The Local Pulse

Because it anchors itself in one of Honolulu’s busiest hubs, expect a bustling, occasionally loud environment. The acoustics can get lively as the evening progresses, which suits the casual, drink-centric nature of an izakaya perfectly. Parking in this part of town is famously tricky—your best bet is to utilize the validation offered at the complex or opt for a rideshare to avoid circling for a spot. It is an ideal venue for those who appreciate high-quality sashimi but prefer their dinner served with a side of sophisticated chaos rather than quiet austerity.

I have been going here for the last six years and I love this place, the last two times I’ve went have been terrible. The first time we were seated at a table with a group of four. The rest of the restaurant was empty and after 15 minutes we had to get up and ask someone to come to our table while the service staff sat at the bar talking. The second time we came back it was two of us so we sat at the bar. The bartenders gave terrible service and hurried us to our check before their event staff took over. After being served our meal we had to ask the bus boy to ask the bartender to get us beers because the three bartenders were in the corner talking after we attempted to wave them down multiple times. The manger asked how our service was and after we told him we were not satisfied the bartenders became short and rude with us until we closed out our tab again. Which we had to void and reopen because they charged us for our dinner that we already closed our tab to.

Absolutely fabulous! Everything we had was fresh, clean and bright tasting. It was a busy night before a show but the staff, while hurried were very accommodating. Highly recommend!

Had such a great experience at Doraku Kaka’ako! We were seated quickly and the service was just as fast. The staff were incredibly kind, friendly, and attentive the entire time. They made sure we had enough space for my daughter’s stroller, which I really appreciated. The food came out super fast, and everything ran so smoothly. I also loved the music playlist, it really added to the vibe. They even went out of their way to hold the door open for me as I was leaving with the stroller, such a thoughtful touch. Overall, amazing service and a very welcoming experience. Definitely coming back!

Had an incredible experience at Doraku Sushi Kaka’ako celebrating my twins’ 21st birthday—and they absolutely crushed it. Austin (server), Chef on duty, and Micah (manager) made the entire night feel personal and seamless. We came in on a Monday night, and they couldn’t have been more accommodating with a larger group and a special occasion. The real standout—Chef went off-script and created custom rolls not even on the menu just to wow us… and he delivered. Every plate hit, presentation was on point, and you could tell there was pride behind it. Service was sharp, energy was right, and they made a milestone night feel like something bigger than just dinner. That’s how you do it. We’ll be back. 🔥🍣

We came here for a weekday lunch. It was a challenge to find parking. Our experience: a-the food comes when ready so prepare to share everything or suffer waiting for yours while everyone else gets theirs; b-there are fewer staff during lunch so prepare to be patient; c-portion sizes are highly variable but in general high value for money. We ordered a hamachi carpaccio (5 stars) which was a nice shareable appetizer. Then we each got a main plate: misoyaki butterfish (huge), hamachi kama (huge) and pork belly with scallops (mini). Oh, and in case you need a little starch to go with your fish or meat you can order a bowl of rice (huge). We shared 1 bowl of rice across the 3 of us.

I came here with a large group. The service was great and we had a really nice time. We ordered a ton of different things. The only reason im giving it a 4 is because my friend and I got sick that night following dinner so we think it was something we ate here unfortunately.

Doraku at Kakaako is a beautiful, classy restaurant with a variety of menu items, made to cater to a variety of dietary needs and preferences. Chef Jigo made us some absolutely phenomenal house specialty rolls. Would highly recommend! The staff is friendly, and helpful.

While I noted gluten free needs before coming and again upon arriving there were many mix ups. This is a serious issue for many and while I spoke about this multiple times during ordering and once items came out, I have to say this place is not somewhere I can come back to 2 orders came out not gluten free… and I’m paying for it. Order inaccurate: while we were told we were ordering 2 orders of 2 “pieces” of salmon sashimi they got the order wrong and we were slammed with a bill much much greater than what was expected. We did not eat the extra pieces of sashimi that erroneously came with the order but we still had to pay… 2 stars for the food: I will say the mushroom order & salmon carpaccio was good, but everything else had a strong taste of toxic, fragranced dish soap. (The natto rolls, the squid) I truly try to make the best of meals so I squeezed a lot of lemon and put salt on it. Very disappointed & my guest and I felt unwell that evening and the morning after… I had high hopes because reviews were promising but this was a let down to be quite honest! The server did said she tried to communicate our needs but when we pointed out the salmon order was wrong she said “sorry” with no action to rectify her mistake.

Kobe sliders are top tier, they were so good I keep thinking about them. The tempura brownies with the vanilla ice cream were also amazing. I really enjoyed the lychee martini as well! Everyone here was super kind, and service was quick and efficient as well.
