A Bold Taste of Korea in Kaka’ako

Dokkaebi brings a sharp, modern edge to the Korean dining scene in the heart of Honolulu’s Kaka’ako district. Stepping off the street, you are immediately met with the sizzle of house-made kimchi and the heavy, comforting scent of bubbling stews. It is a place that feels less like a quiet sit-down dinner and more like a high-energy gathering spot for those who appreciate authentic flavors without the stuffy formalities.

The Culinary Focus

The kitchen leans heavily into traditional recipes elevated by high-quality local ingredients. The signature galbi-jjim is a standout, featuring braised short ribs that pull apart with the slightest nudge of a fork. The sweetness of the pear-based marinade balances perfectly against the depth of soy and garlic. For those who enjoy a bit of heat, the spicy soft tofu stew packs a punch that lingers long after the final spoonful, served piping hot in heavy earthenware that keeps the broth roiling.

The Room and the Vibe

Expect a buzzing atmosphere. The acoustics are lively, leaning toward loud, which makes it perfect for a night out with friends rather than a whispered first date. The decor is industrial-chic, reflecting the surrounding neighborhood’s transition from warehouse space to urban hub. One thing to keep in mind: parking in this pocket of Honolulu can be a bit of a scramble, so arrive a few minutes early to scout a spot along the street or in nearby public lots.

Dokkaebi isn't trying to be a white-tablecloth establishment; it is a straightforward, flavor-forward destination for anyone chasing the best Korean comfort food in town. Whether you are grabbing a quick lunch while exploring the local mural art or settling in for a long dinner, the focus remains entirely on the plate.

Very delicious, and the head man I charge knows how to make good humored jokes!! Very much recommend the boneless spicy chicken and the chicken skinless bowl!! My wife and I very much enjoyed the different flavored sides to go with the chicken.

It was so delicious! #5 Dokkaebi Trio #8 Jumbo Chicken Taco #13 Boneless Crispy Spicy Chicken It's perfect for seniors too. Since it's right in front of Ross, it's a great place to eat after shopping. Since it's located on Route 72, the menu is extensive. It's also perfect for taking home as a lunch box!

Until recently, this place was famous for its Sandy Beach food! Menu prices range from $8 to $20, and even the cheaper options are delicious. The $20 Dokkaebi Rio Bowl (beef, chicken, and shrimp) was incredibly filling and generous with rice, leaving me completely full. All three dishes I ordered came with salad. The combination of rice, meat, vegetables, and nachos was perfect! (I'm not sure exactly how to describe it, but the menu is Mexican-style with a Hawaiian/Korean twist.) Furthermore, the owner and his mother run the place together. The owner is incredibly kind and welcoming, and I really felt the Korean spirit here! There's a park in front of the food truck, making it a great place to eat and drink! It feels like a picnic!
