The Art of Japanese Curry Customization in McCully

Walking into the Honolulu branch of Coco Ichibanya, you are immediately met with the savory, complex aroma of slow-simmered spices that define Japan’s most beloved comfort food. Situated right at the bustling intersection of McCully and Kapiolani, this spot serves as a reliable go-to for locals craving a bowl that feels tailored specifically to their personal palate.

Build Your Perfect Bowl

The magic here lies in the modular menu. You start by selecting your spice level—ranging from mild to a level that will genuinely test your heat tolerance—and your rice portion. The signature pork-based curry sauce is rich and velvety, clinging perfectly to the breaded pork cutlet (katsu) that many regulars consider non-negotiable. Whether you opt for the classic spinach and cheese topping or go for something heartier like the fried chicken, the kitchen maintains a consistent, high-standard execution that has made this brand a global phenomenon.

The McCully Vibe

The interior is functional and bright, designed for quick, satisfying meals rather than linger-all-day dining. It is a fantastic choice for a solo lunch or a casual dinner with friends after exploring the nearby Kapiolani corridor. Be aware that the parking situation in this part of Honolulu can be a bit tight, especially during peak dinner hours, so arriving a few minutes early or utilizing street parking nearby is a wise strategy. The rhythmic clatter of spoons against ceramic bowls and the efficient, friendly service create an upbeat, fast-paced environment that keeps the queue moving even when the dining room is at capacity.

Gotta say, this is hands down the best chicken katsu curry I’ve ever had. Absolute perfection to the bones! The curry is so rich and flavorful, I promise you’ll be licking your plate clean!! The chicken is perfectly breaded, crunchy in all the right ways, and melts in your mouth. If you’re in Honolulu, this is a must-try. Fully recommended! 10/10.

My favorite Japanese Curry spot! They are located in McCully Shopping center. They have take out and dine in options. The seating area has choice of counter with view of the kitchen or booths. The staff is nice and sat us right away. I like to try different options all the time, but I recommend adding cheese with anything! This time we ordered Chicken Cutlet curry with cheese and kimchi, pork cutlet curry with cheese and gyoza, plain curry udon, shabu shabu beef and spinach udon with cheese, fried scallops and Baby tako. Everything was delicious! The value and quality of the curry here is amazing!

Heard about this place from my brother. Since my favorite foods are curry and katsu I had to try it. Found out it originated in Japan, so I had high expectations. The curry was good but the katsu detracted from the dish. I had the tonkatsu and my wife had the chicken katsu, but wasn't up to Japan standards. Additionally both had a burnt taste. At first I thought they overcooked my tonkatsu but having tasted my wife's chicken katsu, I think the problem was with the oil. They probably burned something else in the oil and of course once you do that, the burnt taste permeates everything else cooked in that oil. They probably need better oil management. This was a let down considering it's a Japan based restaurant and every topping is deep fried. Other than that misstep this was good and filled me up.
