Curry House Coco Ichibanya (1450 Ala Moana Blvd ground level)
About
A Japanese Curry Institution at Ala Moana
When the craving for a customizable, soul-warming bowl hits while you are exploring the Ala Moana area, Coco Ichibanya serves as a reliable anchor. This Honolulu outpost of the global Japanese chain is located right on the ground level, offering a quick, no-frills transition from shopping to dining. The interior is bright, utilitarian, and fast-paced, making it a go-to spot for solo diners or shoppers looking for a substantial, savory meal without the fuss of a long wait.
Tailored Spice and Hearty Toppings
The beauty of this spot lies in the arithmetic of your order. You choose your level of heat—ranging from mild to a level that will genuinely test your resilience—and pair it with a massive menu of toppings. The signature pork katsu is the gold standard here; the breading stays remarkably crisp even when submerged in the signature brown curry sauce. If you want to lean into the local flavor, many regulars add a side of kimchi or opt for the vegetable-heavy variations to balance the richness of the roux.
Navigating the Ala Moana Rush
Because of its prime positioning, expect the room to hum with the energy of hungry tourists and locals alike. It can get quite loud during peak lunch hours, and seating is efficient rather than lounge-style. One minor observation: be prepared for a bit of a shuffle when the store is at capacity, as the popularity of these Japanese comfort bowls keeps the tables turning rapidly. Whether you are fueling up before hitting the beach or grabbing a post-shopping dinner, it remains the most consistent place to get an authentic, deeply spiced curry fix in the heart of Honolulu.

When in doubt, Curry House is the go to for a great meal. The curry is flavorful and you can customize it to your heart's content. There's definitely something for everyone here! And not to worry, the "spicy" is not spicy at all.

We were ordering take out and the person talking to us was really rude. She had an attitude and it brought the experience down. This really sucks because every other time where we came to this curry house we always get good service, but this time around the service done by the person near the register is really bad. We don’t know her name but we know she was working during the 5:52pm shift on May 24th 2026.

Curry house is a staple for curry on Oahu. Tastes the same every time you go, very reliable.

Coco‘s curry is one of the most delicious things in the world. Anytime I go to a state that has a Coco’s. It’s literally my first stop. Discovered it in Japan and now crave it for life.

Great vegetable and oyster curry. Order extra curry sauce on the side in a bowl. The fried gyozas are great with soy sauce. I'm so full!

This place brought back memories of the similar places I have visited in Japan. Food was really good and servings are huge. Also fast and attentive service

Gotta say, this is hands down the best chicken katsu curry I’ve ever had. Absolute perfection to the bones! The curry is so rich and flavorful, I promise you’ll be licking your plate clean!! The chicken is perfectly breaded, crunchy in all the right ways, and melts in your mouth. If you’re in Honolulu, this is a must-try. Fully recommended! 10/10.

My favorite Japanese Curry spot! They are located in McCully Shopping center. They have take out and dine in options. The seating area has choice of counter with view of the kitchen or booths. The staff is nice and sat us right away. I like to try different options all the time, but I recommend adding cheese with anything! This time we ordered Chicken Cutlet curry with cheese and kimchi, pork cutlet curry with cheese and gyoza, plain curry udon, shabu shabu beef and spinach udon with cheese, fried scallops and Baby tako. Everything was delicious! The value and quality of the curry here is amazing!

Heard about this place from my brother. Since my favorite foods are curry and katsu I had to try it. Found out it originated in Japan, so I had high expectations. The curry was good but the katsu detracted from the dish. I had the tonkatsu and my wife had the chicken katsu, but wasn't up to Japan standards. Additionally both had a burnt taste. At first I thought they overcooked my tonkatsu but having tasted my wife's chicken katsu, I think the problem was with the oil. They probably burned something else in the oil and of course once you do that, the burnt taste permeates everything else cooked in that oil. They probably need better oil management. This was a let down considering it's a Japan based restaurant and every topping is deep fried. Other than that misstep this was good and filled me up.

If I could give 0 stars I would.. I can tell they rushed to cook the food because it had no flavor. I asked for spicy and it didn’t even taste mild. I asked for scrambled egg they said they only serve sunny side eggs I proceeded to go with the sunny side egg and it was basically raw. I rhetorically asked the waitress if this is a sunny side and she said yes never in my 32 years of life have I ever seen a sunny side egg look like this. If you had coco’s in other places this is by far the worst one do not recommend.
