A Throwback to Mid-Century Honolulu

Stepping into Cuckoo Coconuts feels less like entering a modern eatery and more like stumbling onto the set of a 1950s surf film. Located in the heart of the Waikiki district, this spot leans heavily into the kitsch that defined Hawaii’s golden era of tourism. You are greeted by the hum of classic rock hits and the dim, amber glow of pufferfish lanterns that hang from the rafters.

Island Classics with a Retro Twist

The kitchen specializes in approachable, comfort-forward Hawaiian fare. Their signature Loco Moco is a crowd favorite, featuring a hearty beef patty and savory gravy that arrives steaming at your table. If you want something lighter, the fresh catch sandwiches provide a salty, satisfying punch of local flavor. The drink menu is a tribute to the classic Tiki movement; expect oversized ceramic mugs and generous pours of rum-heavy cocktails garnished with enough fruit to make a parrot blush.

The Waikiki Atmosphere

This is not the place for a quiet, intimate conversation. The acoustics bounce off the wooden walls, creating a lively, boisterous environment that suits groups of friends or travelers looking to shed their inhibitions. While the space can feel a bit cramped during the late-night rush—especially when a live band takes the small stage—that proximity to the action is part of the charm. Whether you are coming off the sand at nearby Kuhio Beach or looking for a casual post-dinner drink in Honolulu, the unpretentious, slightly eccentric energy here is a welcome change from the polished hotel lounges just blocks away.

The atmosphere is pretty cool in a cheese Hawaiian kind of way, the band (live music) was fantastic, the tequila didn't taste how it should, maybe watered down or not the specific choice ordered. The calamari tasted good but chewy. All in all, a 3 1/2 because the service was on point.

Fun place for an evening of cocktails and live music. Easy to access from the touristy spots at Waikiki and the band playing was excellent too. The cocktails are strong ( you will not complain for lack of alcohol here). The real pinacolada served in an actual pineapple is recommended and might even suffice for two people.

What a great accidental find! We heard live music from the balcony of our hotel! They have live music every night from 7pm to 10pm and boy, those bands don’t disappoint! Special kudos to Oldies and Goodies who are rock stars! 🤙 The place is vibing! Come get a drink and some food and you will have an amazing time!

I loved the atmosphere, the live music, and the cocktails. The food was pretty average, but I really enjoyed the overall experience and the moment.

Honestly, I have to say that based on the reviews I expected more. A drink for almost 20 dollars served in a plastic cup, nothing special except for the high price. They charge an extra 15% for service, and when paying by card they even ask for an additional tip. For these 2 drinks we payed 42$ The only positive thing is the very stylish decor and a great band and fast service.

We like to sit at the bar. 3rd or 4th or 5th time we’ve been here over the last two visits spanning ~2-3 years. Fantastic live music - lots of classics/rock like Journey/Prince/Poison, etc. Very fun, communal vibe. No dancing but you can “dance” in your seat and as much as I’m not a “dancer” in bars, I wanted to sway and jam out and laugh at the other guys “air drumming”/getting into it. We came here the first time for the pins colada in a pineapple, came back for the same, stayed for the vibe and the good music and good time. And there’s lots of pretty lights. Not far from main strip. Go get an Aloha Melt after!! Never had the food, the drinks are strong - kudos to all the bartenders, since I’ve been more than once and also years apart. A regular part of the rotation when visiting. P.S. after reading other reviews… 1.) the sign for no dancing is very clearly posted at the entrance, and it’s polite and explanatory as to why 2.) the sign wasn’t there 2 years ago, meaning something obviously happened 3.) this doesn’t stop anyone from having a nice time and enjoying the music! 4.) people still tried to get up and dance and “push” it with the staff in a teasing, drunk manner and the staff was super kind, playful, but still quickly intervened and encouraged people to cut it out in literally the nicest way possible. It is what it is, and it’s still a great time had.

This restaurant lured us in with the live music - the atmosphere is definitely fun. However, if you’re going for food go somewhere else. We ordered the Hawaiian burger and the loco moco burger and both tasted like they were pre-cooked, frozen, and then microwaved. I feel like I’ve had better airline food. The drinks come in plastic or paper cups unless you order the pina colada - then it comes in a pineapple, which is fun but pricey. First few sips were strong, but once you get to the bottom it’s basically just a smoothie. Ended up spending $73 for 2 people for mediocre food. I don’t usually post Google reviews, but decided I would to genuinely help others. Definitely a tourist trap. Take your money somewhere else.

Food and drinks are good, but can be a bit expensive. Great vibes, very classic bar feel. Very unfortunate about the dancing rule but I understand. (I heard about the unfortunate incident). 😔 The Oldies and Goodies band is awesome, definitely give them a tip. Jack the guitarist, is especially cool. Give this place a visit!
