Clau & Chui's Mexican Cocina
About
A Slice of Mexico in the Heart of Honolulu
Walking into Clau & Chui's Mexican Cocina feels less like stepping into a restaurant and more like visiting a relative’s kitchen in Guadalajara. The air is thick with the scent of toasted cumin, charred jalapeños, and masa being pressed by hand. Located in the bustling urban core of Honolulu, this spot strips away the pretense of high-end dining in favor of soul-satisfying, straightforward cooking.
The Menu: Where Spice Meets Tradition
The menu leans heavily into Oaxacan-inspired comfort food. Locals frequently head here for the signature birria tacos—the meat is slow-cooked until it practically disintegrates, served with a side of rich, spiced consommé that demands to be dipped. If you are looking for heat, their house-made salsa macha carries a smoky, nutty depth that lingers on the palate long after the meal ends.
The Atmosphere and Local Vibe
Clau & Chui's is defined by its unpretentious, high-energy environment. You’ll hear the rhythmic clatter of pans and spirited chatter bouncing off the bright, colorful walls. It is an ideal space for a casual midday refuel or a low-key dinner with friends who prioritize flavor over formality. Be aware that seating is cozy—you might end up brushing elbows with your neighbor, but that is all part of the charm.
Know Before You Go
The space is humble, and during the peak lunch hour, the line can snake toward the door, so timing your visit is key. While the street parking in this part of Honolulu can be a game of patience, the reward of authentic, handmade tortillas is worth the circling. This is a family-run operation where you can taste the dedication in every bite, making it a standout choice for those tired of generic island fusion fare.

A Mexican food gem in Hawaii Kai! We’ve passed by this spot so many times but never ventured in, and I’m so glad we finally gave it a shot! The carne asada tacos were delicious and the service was great. We will definitely be coming back! It was nice and quiet on a Sunday afternoon.

Nice little low key spot by the water with traditional Mexican fare. The queso birria tacos are amazing and the best I’ve had on Oahu. It also comes with some consume for dipping or sipping! Highly recommend, will be back to try the rest of the menu soon.

I'm sorry to say the food and service here on a Saturday early evening was just plain AWFUL. Ordered a chicken quesadilla $18 a street chicken taco for $5 and fish tacos for $19. Soft drink dispenser was out of diet coke. It took about 15 minutes for the bland sparse and flat quesadilla to arrive, quite tasteless and unsatisfying. Cheese was barely melted and hardly any meat inside with no sides. It took another 21 minutes for the fish tacos to be delivered after having to ask about my meal twice. Something wrong was obviously was going on in the kitchen. The meat had a very fishy smell, texture was like rubber and tasted like chum. (CHUM: a type of food made from ground-up fish parts, used as bait to attract fish) Imagine someone giving you one large fish stick, microwaving it to death and then literally breaking it into many small pieces and spreading it out into three soft tacos. The tacos were mostly cabbage and radishes. I suspect they ran out of fish and instead of just saying so, they served subpar servings of whatever fish they could scrounge up. I'm sure the restaurant business, especially in Hawaii can be a challenge but serving this kind of food does their establishment no favors. The only good thing about the meal was the little fiery hot sauce they served with the food. I couldn't wait to get out of the place and would never go back.
