Fast-Paced Flavors in the Heart of Honolulu
When you are navigating the midday rush near downtown Honolulu and the craving for reliable, no-nonsense Chinese takeout hits, Chowmein Express provides a straightforward solution. This is not a place for white tablecloths or long, lingering dinners; it is a high-turnover kitchen designed for those who need a generous portion of noodles or fried rice without the wait.
The Kitchen Pulse
Expect the rhythmic clatter of metal spatulas against seasoned woks the moment you step through the door. The air here is heavy with the savory, toasted aroma of soy sauce, garlic, and ginger—a scent that defines classic local-style Chinese comfort food. The menu centers on the staples that built Hawaii’s casual dining scene, with the namesake chow mein serving as the primary draw. The noodles are consistently cooked to a soft bite, tossed with fresh sprouts and scallions that provide a necessary crunch.
What to Expect
This is a functional spot that caters perfectly to office workers and locals on the move. While the interior aesthetic is purely utilitarian, the efficiency is its greatest asset. Be prepared for a tight transition in the lobby during the lunch hour as the local crowd queues up for their combos. If you are looking for a place to sit for hours, this might feel a bit fast-paced, but for a solid, flavor-forward meal that fits into a busy schedule, it hits the mark. Parking can occasionally be a bit of a puzzle in this bustling part of the city, so planning a quick dash for pickup is often the smartest move for hungry commuters.

Lots of bad reviews but that wasn’t my experience. This is basic Chinese food served at an airport. With that as context, wow was this amazing. So reasonably priced. Base that is a choice between fried rice and chow mein, I chose fried rice which was well prepared and tasty. With it I had the broccoli and beef, which tasted amazing and the brocoli was al denté, just the way I like it. Also chose the spicy Mongolian beef which had strong savoury flavor. Everything was very fresh, tasty, hot, and plentiful. I was stuffed. Service was kind and quick. I really don’t know what else you need from airport food. Solid option that I would be excited to go back and have again. Everyone with me thought it was great too, and we’re all very picky.

Barely edible Chinese food. 2 item combo is 14.99, 3 item combo is 16.99 as of September 2024. Orange chicken was actually good. Spicy chicken had 7 dried chili's in my serving but was not spicy at all. No flavor. Mushroom chicken was pretty flavorless as well....

Food is unseasoned and bland. They mixed old broccoli with fresh and served it. Beef is thinly slice to save cost. Expected a much better taste for the price. Avoid it if you can cause it will not live up to expectations.
