A Taste of Island Comfort
Tucked away in the busy streets of Honolulu, Chopstick & Rice serves as a no-frills sanctuary for those craving authentic local comfort food. This spot captures the essence of Hawaii’s multi-cultural culinary roots, moving away from tourist-heavy menus to offer plates that feel like a home-cooked meal. The kitchen focuses on high-volume, quick-service favorites that draw a steady crowd of local office workers and nearby residents looking for a reliable lunch break.
Sights and Sounds of the Kitchen
The interior is utilitarian and efficient, characterized by the rhythmic clatter of metal ladles against woks and the hum of a bustling kitchen staff. You will smell the familiar, savory aroma of soy-marinated proteins and freshly steamed short-grain rice the moment you walk through the door. It is the kind of place where the line moves fast, and the focus is entirely on the plate in front of you. Be prepared for a tight squeeze during the peak lunch hour, as seating is limited and the space fills up quickly with regulars.
Signature Staples
The menu is anchored by classic local-style bento boxes and hearty rice bowls. The chefs specialize in mastery of the grill, delivering crispy-skinned chicken katsu and tender beef teriyaki that pairs perfectly with the house-made macaroni salad. If you are exploring the local food scene, this is an essential stop for a quick, filling, and honest meal that defines the flavor profile of the Pacific. Whether you are grabbing a quick bite before heading toward Waikiki or looking for a staple takeout spot, Chopstick & Rice delivers consistent, straightforward quality without the fuss.

I've gone to this restaurant before for both eat in and take out. Generally I'm happy with the food and service. I ordered a pho to take out however the portions especially the soybeans and the basil was a joke. Maybe a pinch of soybeans and one sprig of basil with maybe four leaves on it. Please raise your price and provide a normal portion rather than pull the shrinkflation card and sell it for the same price with less food. Trust me people notice. I will go back as maybe this was a portion control mistake by one of the staff and I do want to support local business.

Hands down the best pho in Hawaii Kai—possibly on the entire island. I ordered the combo pho, and it was outstanding. The broth was incredibly rich and flavorful, and you can tell a lot of time and care goes into making it. At around $19 a bowl, the portions are generous and well worth the price. Every cut of meat from the tendon and tripe to the brisket and flank was tender, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. One thing I especially appreciated was that none of the meats had the off-putting smell that can sometimes occur when pho ingredients aren’t prepared properly. They also serve bean sprouts and fresh vegetables on the side, which adds to the authentic experience. Overall, this was one of the best bowls of pho I’ve had, and I can’t wait to come back and try more items from the menu.

Wow! First time here and wish we came sooner. We only ordered a couple things but definitely coming back to try more. The House Fried Chicken is a MUST TRY. The combination of the fresh lemongrass with a crispy crust and juicy meat, made this a standout for us. Wasn’t greasy at all too. We also got the Lemongrass Chicken Bahn Mi Sliders and they were the perfect little shareable for us. For picky kids like ours, we got the Kids Pho (noodles w/ choice of broth) and it was huge! Didn’t expect the bowl to be that big so we had a lot of leftovers. The service was great and the place is very clean. Adding this to our restaurant rotation.
