About
A Neighborhood Staple for Island Comfort Food
Located in the heart of Honolulu, Chong’s Market is the kind of hole-in-the-wall where locals stop to grab a quick, satisfying bite without any pretense. If you are navigating the streets near the Kalihi district, you’ll likely spot the storefront by the steady stream of regulars moving in and out with paper plates in hand.
The Flavor of Local Traditions
This is not a place for white-tablecloth service; it’s a meat market and kitchen that specializes in traditional Hawaiian plate lunches. The scent of shoyu chicken and smoky kalua pork hits you the moment you step through the door, usually accompanied by the faint, rhythmic hum of a bustling kitchen staff working behind the counter. Their signature poke is prepared fresh daily, offering a clean, oceanic brightness that serves as the perfect contrast to the heavier, savory comfort dishes they are famous for.
What to Expect
Expect a no-frills experience. The space is compact, and during the lunch rush, it can get quite loud with chatter from the neighborhood crowd. You might have to squeeze past a few people waiting for their orders, but that is all part of the charm. Whether you are a local picking up a hearty meal before heading to the job site or a visitor looking for a genuine taste of Honolulu cuisine, the value here is unmatched.
Parking can be a bit of a dance, so be prepared to maneuver into a tight spot if you arrive during peak hours. It’s a small, honest operation that prioritizes substance over style, making it a reliable pillar of the local food scene.

I was refused entrance after grabbing my pre-ordered food from La Marea across the street (took all but 30 seconds to grab). They claimed I couldn't park there and did not let me in. Had full intention of buying from here. Glad they refused me anyway as there were roaches crawling all outside of the store. It was also 10am and zero customers so not sure what the big fuss was.
