A Fiery Escape in the Heart of Waikiki

Stepping into Chong Qing Hot Pot, you are immediately met with the rhythmic clinking of chopsticks against ceramic and the pungent, unmistakable aroma of Sichuan peppercorns simmering in copper basins. Located just a short stroll from the bustling sands of Waikiki, this spot offers a departure from the typical resort fare, focusing instead on the bold, numbing heat of authentic Chinese hot pot.

The Art of the Numbing Broth

The culinary philosophy here centers on the signature spicy red oil broth—a complex base loaded with dried chilies and aromatics that challenge the palate in the best way possible. For those who prefer a gentler approach, the menu offers a split-pot design, allowing you to balance the tongue-tingling fire with a milder, soothing pork bone or mushroom broth. The thinly sliced wagyu beef and fresh, local seafood options make for a communal meal that feels both indulgent and interactive.

What to Expect Before You Dine

The atmosphere leans toward casual and high-energy, making it an excellent choice for groups looking to share a meal rather than just grab a quick bite. Be prepared for a lively room; the hum of conversation and the bubbling of pots can get quite loud during peak dinner hours. While the seating is designed for social interaction, the space can feel compact, especially when the house is full. It is an honest, straightforward approach to Szechuan cuisine that prioritizes deep, layered flavors over excessive flair. If you are navigating the Honolulu nightlife and find yourself craving something that cuts through the tropical humidity with a sharp, spicy bite, this is your destination.

Lunch on Friday. All you can eat and we got the BBQ too. $5 more per person, but really worth it. So much food and everything delicious. Very attentive service. My wife loved trying all sorts of things that I'm not sure what they were, but she is happy. Excellent beef bulgagi, mariniated short ribs, steak, and even Spam. No wait for a table. I had the spicy cabage broth, my wife had the tomato broth. Both tasty but I really liked the flavor from mine. Just try this place. I'm very impressed.

Meats and seafood came out fast. Vegetables were fresh. The hot pot cooked the meat fast. Staff are attentive and courteous.

Really nice food with a variety of choices and new things to try while still containing authentic dishes. The atmosphere is very nice although you might want to come early or make a reservation before it starts to become crowded. All in all a really nice experience and a well spent night.

This is my go-to hot pot spot on Oahu. The ingredients are always fresh and there’s a great variety. The servers are all friendly, we come here pretty often, so they remember what drinks each of us likes, which is really sweet. One thing I really appreciate is that they also have Chinese black vinegar in sauce bar(many hotpot only have white vinegar) If you’re Chinese and love hot pot, you know this is a big deal. This place makes me feel really comfortable, and it’s always reliable. I’ve been here so many times, and it has never let me down. I truly recommend this place.

Pretty solid hot pot experience. If you go within 2 days surrounding your birthday you can eat for free. The meats and veggies all were very fresh quality. Sauce bar was very well stocked but wish they also had garlic, which I didn't see out this time. There is also a wide sampling of desserts but most were pretty average buffet quality. Also wish the spicy hot pot we ordered was spicier- it was very mild- but otherwise quite yummy, and the staff were extremely on top of things!

Weekday lunch. $40 gets you an all-you-can-eat hot pot and BBQ combo, and let me tell you, it’s worth every damn dollar. Fatty beef that dissolves into the broth like it knows it was born for it. Lamb that actually tastes like lamb. Premium beef’s on the menu too, lean and proper, but give me fat any day—I want my meat with character. You get your own pot, set your spice level, and go to town. The veggies are laid out buffet-style—grab what you want, throw it in, no one’s watching. Then there’s the sauce station, and this is where it gets personal. I go for the sesame. Thick, nutty, deep. I don’t overthink it—green onion, cilantro, a little hot oil. There’s a sweet garlic sauce too, dangerously good. You could drink it straight if no one was looking. For the grill. The bulgogi is the star—Korean-style, marinated just right, sweet and savory with those little crispy edges. I throw pineapple on the grill too. Trust me, grilled pineapple with charred beef is some kind of magic. Outrageously good service. There’s a guy and a woman working the floor like they’ve taken a vow. Water filled, plates cleared, questions answered before I even ask. I tipped extra, and I don’t say that lightly. Hawaii hasn’t handed me service like this in years. This place is 10/10.

Update: we’ve returned with some friends from California, who I now suspect were hotpot experts. We all enjoyed our own selected soup base. You can actually request different level of spiciness. I tried tomato based soup for the first time and it was quite good. As always the meats and veggies were fresh, and the service was A+. The quality of the beef is one of the best we’ve tried at the island’s many hotpot places. By the way, you now can order a combo of hot pot and bbq for $43 for dinner or $39 for just the hot pot. This is an all you can eat place with a choice of either DIY BBQ or hot pot. We opted for hot pot that came with 4 different choices of mea. We tried all 4 meats: lamb, pork and two types of beef. The quality of the meat was surprisingly good and as well as the vegetables. There were also many good choices for your soup base. I had the original morrow flavor and it was very good. There was also a self serve counter for other ingredients including very fresh vegetables, mushrooms, fish cakes, intestines, large shrimps and many other tasty choices. Soft drinks were also included in the prices. It even had my favorite, the Chinese kale (茼蒿)。 The service was 5+ stars. The staff was friendly and very attentive. The price was reasonable compared with California restaurants and the quality was just as good if not better than AYCE places in LA. We will definitely bring family and friends here. Note: lunch does stop at 3, so don’t arrive too close to 3 p.m. for lunch.
