Cho Dang Restaurant
About
Handmade Flavors in the Heart of Honolulu
Stepping into Cho Dang Restaurant feels less like a formal outing and more like visiting a local secret tucked away in the vibrant streets of Honolulu. This neighborhood staple is revered by locals for one specific reason: their house-made tofu. Unlike mass-produced versions, the tofu here arrives at your table steaming hot, possessing a delicate, silken texture that serves as the perfect foundation for their bubbling, spice-forward Soon Tofu stews.
The Sensory Experience
The air inside is thick with the savory, pungent aroma of fermenting kimchi and simmering garlic. You will often hear the rhythmic clatter of metal chopsticks against heavy stone bowls, a sound that signals a serious meal is underway. It is a no-frills, utilitarian space where the focus remains strictly on the intensity of the broth and the quality of the side dishes. Be prepared to navigate the limited parking stalls nearby, as this popular spot often fills up quickly during the lunch hour rush.
Why Locals Keep Coming Back
Cho Dang is built for those who prioritize culinary substance over polished aesthetics. The menu focuses on traditional Korean home-style cooking, featuring robust banchan—small, shareable side dishes—that change with the season. Whether you are craving a fiery, pepper-dusted seafood stew or a comforting bowl of scorched rice porridge, the kitchen delivers consistent, heart-warming plates. It is an ideal destination for solo diners looking for a quick, nourishing bowl or groups of friends who appreciate unpretentious, high-heat comfort food in the middle of our bustling city.

This place has been here for so long, and I frequent Cho Dang. Their prices have gone up for simple dishes like the bibimnaengmyeon and zucchini-jeon. $18 for the noodles that have like $2 in ingredients and nearly $22 for 8 pieces of zucchini jeon. $30 for just those two dishes that would be $8 in South Korea (I lived there for over a decade and returned to Hawaii this year, 2026). The least they could do is clean up their restaurant and get some new tables and chairs.

The staff there is extremely rude and disrespectful, especially the lady that works there. Food is average. Price is good though. But every time I went there, I see the same lady and she gave me stink eye and was rude as hell. After dinning, she told me to pay tips. I would rather get cancer than eating there again.

The spicy beef soup was only $10.99. It was very cheap for a Korean dish so I had decided to have my lunch here. Once the side dishes and the main dish and a bowl of rice came out it turned out to be a lot. The taste was also good. This was a definite cheap eats in town. This is a small restaurant with a waitress that had difficulty with speaking & understanding english, but she did try to be helpful.
