Tropical Refreshment in the Heart of Chinatown

Walking through the vibrant streets of Honolulu’s Chinatown, it is impossible to miss the colorful abundance spilling out from Chau’s Fresh Fruit. This is not a place for white-tablecloth service; it is a quintessential local stop for those who value peak-season produce over polished amenities. The air here carries the sweet, heady scent of ripe papaya and the sharp, bright tang of Hawaiian gold pineapples.

A Local Shortcut to Nature’s Candy

Chau’s specializes in the kind of hyper-local snacking that defines island life. They are widely recognized for their expertly pre-cut fruit cups that make for an ideal walking snack while you explore the surrounding markets. Whether you are looking for chunks of dragon fruit, chilled rambutan, or perfectly segmented citrus, the quality here remains consistently superior to what you will find at chain grocery stores. The staff works with a rhythmic efficiency, slicing through thick peels with a speed that only comes from years of repetition.

What You Need to Know Before You Visit

Because this spot caters primarily to locals doing their daily shopping, do not expect a place to sit and linger. It is a grab-and-go operation. Be prepared to navigate narrow sidewalks and keep your eyes open for the small storefront, as it blends seamlessly into the bustling, high-energy pace of the neighborhood. It is the perfect stop if you want an authentic taste of Hawaii that feels unpretentious and genuinely rooted in the community. Bring cash, as small, independent island fruit stands often prefer it for quick transactions.

Exploring Hawaii's Chinatown was delightful. I stumbled upon Chau's Fresh Fruit near the entrance of Maunakea Marketplace. I ordered a sugar cane, watermelon, and mango smoothie. The smoothies were priced at $7 each. It was a great deal considering the generous size. The fruits tasted fresh and the sugar cane drink wasn't made on the spot. The order was prepared promptly. It was interesting to find Vietnamese-speaking staff. While the ambiance isn't relevant, it's a convenient grab-and-go spot. Overall, I had a positive experience and would recommend this place.

Terrible experience – tried to scam me and caused a scene!!! I ordered one durian smoothie ($8.50) and one sugarcane drink ($8.00), totaling $16.50. I paid the owner $20 in cash, and she gave me $3.50 change. Right after, her mom handed me the drinks and still asked me for money again. I calmly told them I already paid and received change, but they kept insisting I didn’t pay. The owner acted confused while the mom started yelling at me in Vietnamese in front of other customers. I asked them to call the police or check their camera footage, but they just kept shouting and demanding money. Eventually, another vendor nearby came over to de-escalate the situation. The owner finally apologized, but the mom continued yelling and wouldn’t let it go. Very upsetting and embarrassing experience! I won’t be coming back, and I wouldn’t recommend this place to others. Be careful if you pay in cash.

They use real fruits, no added sweetener. I got the combination of Papaya and Avocado for $8.

If you’re like us with a day planned at the Ko Olina Lagoons, think about first stopping by Chinatown on your way from Waikiki to have dim sum and pick up some delicious snacks @ Chau’s. A bag of boiled peanuts✅, fresh cut fruit like watermelon, pineapple & Hawaiian papaya ✅, and made-to-order sugar cane juice ✅.

A smoothie place that used real fruits is the best. The lilikoi qas sweet and the seeds are crunchy. So refreshing in this hot Hawaiian weather. I had to go back for round 2 and got the papaya smoothie. The papaya smoothie was so smooth and creamy.

Steamed peanuts are a great beer snack! $1 gets you one small scoop in a bag. I recommend getting $2 because one won't be enough!
